Clearcoat Chipped!

Ok, I have a question that hopefully won't be too painful to my wallet.

My wife knocked the pole over that she uses to put the bird feeders in the trees onto my car. Even though it had a good car cover on it, I now have a chip on the hood/fender corner area about the size of a quarter. The paint is ok, it's just the clear coat chipped off.

I was thinking of trying to build it up with some Future acrylic floor wax and then waxing the area after everything has dried.

Any suggestions, short of killing her, appreciated.

Thanks!

Clive

Is this a repainted car?

Early C4 Corvettes don;t actually have a separate "clear-coat" on the paint. There is a gel-coat of sorts on the SMP but not a OEM clear on the paint. Unless it was some OEM option that came later, the paints always been thick and heavy but not coated. The high gloss comes from the ultra smooth SMP surface.

If its a repaint and there IS clear, it can be patched. The quality of the repair depends on where it is..if its staring at you right on top of the wheel well or the middle of the hood, someplace very obvious I'd get a shop to do it.
If you do this at home, take your time. The biggest mistake people make is rushing the job. It should take 2 days minimum. The spray has to dry to be sanded well enough to blend and feather into the good paint.

Sand it lightly and wipe clean with a high VOC solvent, something that will evaporate quickly but not damage the paint or dry out the good paint. blow dry. If the color is ok and not thru to the panel, you can apply a light mist as described above. Apply multiple lite coats to build it up, but follow directions. Letting a coat dry then applying another too soon or too late can give a cloudy appearence.
Let it dry for a day or 2...more. Sanding clear is polishing. Start with fine paper, 1000 gt paper wet. Wash and move to 1200 or 1500gt and feather the patch into the surrounding area. Finish with 2000gt or scratch remover.

Again, as simple as it sounds if its an obvious spot I'd let a shop do it. They have better quality clears and materials than you cannot buy at the Zone..

I remember the feeling I had when my (ex) was describing the scraping or scratching noises that were coming from under the Corvette that I gave her....

Seeing the air-dam dragging under the car with half the lower radiator shroud :mad was the closest to a 20 yr sentence I've ever come......

Never figuerd who was dumber...

her or me for marrying her.

Not A Repaint

No, sadly this is an original finish car. I haven't really looked closely at it yet, (couldn't bear to, too painful!) but will later on. I'll probably get a price on having it done at a shop soon. Hate to make it worse.

As for the painting phase, in the video that I got about tthe car (part of the owner package) it says the car receives 2 coats of primer, 2 base colour and 2 clearcoats. That's what got me to thinking it chipped off.

Thanks for the help, it is very appreciated!
