I have a question I was wondering if I could replace a manual Climate Control unit with a auto unit for my 1996.

Basically go from this to this is it a plug and play deal anyone know'

Thanks

Yeah you can do it but,But your going the need a Donor Car,a Electronics Degree, and allot of spar time for about the next 2 months!!:thumb:thumb Cheaper to sell your car and buy one with it already on it!:thumb:thumb The manual type is Way more Trouble and Maintenance free!!:thumb Keep It!!:upthumbs

Thanks for the replay GMJunkie.

The wire connections on the back of both units looks different so it sounds like its not worth the trouble.

Thanks Again

Ohhh I wouldn't want to do that. the manual units are a lot less troublesome, and you'd also need to retro-fit the vacuum motors on the internal vent doors. Brrrrrrr I get the willies even thinking about it.

How about changing from the auto to manual in an 88 just as much trouble

Oooch. I think your gonna have lotsa fun trying to find. the control panel and other parts. They're not gonna be available from GM, and I wouldn't wanna evey try to retro-fit the stuff. Plus there's the issue of re-gassing the refrigerant - likely a $500 tab just for that.

I still have odd problems with my auto-temp unit but so far it will work OK after a while. I just don't use it very much, only when it's really hot and raining when I can't put the top down.

The big weakness in the middle years AC units is the mickey mouse compressor - it's jap made and very, it small gives out easily and you can't use another type due to the lack of available space to put it.

I just had the unit converted to R 134 all toll about $200. for that. but that auto unit doesnt like to change temp settings and sometimes fan speeds either. If the unit is bad i will have to replace it.Mechanic told me the compressor is weak and may make it through the season but will need replacing may try an aftermarket from advance auto and see how it works

The auto control unit in my 88 sometimes wont change temps up or down when hitting the cool or warm button. The fan button seems to work ok does the unit need replacing.

Imhorn52 my unit actually works fine I was just wondering how difficult this would be to install since I saw these units on line. After reading everyones post though it just is not worth the trouble.

I dont know how difficult it would be. I guess i will just have to replace mine and see if it thats the problem

There not hard to change, but you may just have some dirty connections in the switch's of the Controls!! I've had success with Very carefully taking them apart and cleaning them, have also found cold solder joints in them and repaired them!! I just did one on a C5 3-4 weeks ago that worked but wouldn't display,Found several cold soulder joints!!:thumb
