Hey guys, I have the engine out of the car, transmission still in the car. I am wanting to replace the clutch fork and throw out bearing. What's the trick? All the Hanes manual says is "remove clutch fork". I would love to. peace Bud :cool

Where's The Bellhousing?

On the engine or still on the trans? With the bellhousing off, on my 62 you just put your hand in from the engine side and pull it off the ball it rides on. Check both for wear, the fork and the ball.

Clarity

Hey Rowdy, thanks for the reply. I was in a hurry when I posted this thread and didn't bother to make it clear. The bellhousing is still on the transmission. It will be no problem at all to pull the bellhousing (I should paint it anyway). I just don't like forcing things too much. Again thanks. peace Bud :cool

There YA GO!

:D :beer Once the bell is off the trans reach in from the engine side and pop the clips off the ball. Just make sure to check for wear.;)

It's Off

Hey Rowdy, got the bellhousing off. Saw how the clutch fork is attached, it came off without a hitch. Now another question, I took off the front cover that bolts on the front of the transmission. There is a hole at the base of the shaft that the throw out bearing rides on. Does this hole face down/up or to either side. Did not pay attention while taking it off.
Color me, :confused peace Bud

Color Me Too.

I'm not sure what cover you're talking about, the cover over the input shaft on the trans?:confused

I'm doing this same job right now (replacing clutch), and I don't know what you mean. Are you talking about the actual bearing?

The front bearing retainer on the trans that the throwout bearing rides on only goes back on one way, with the drainback hole/relief on the inside at the bottom; be sure you get the gasket on correctly so it doesn't block the hole, or you'll end up eventually with trans lube on your clutch.

Wait....what??? I'm confused now, and a little worried (I'm about to put the bearing and fork back on). What gasket? What bearing retainer that the throwout bearing rides on?

Clarity repeated

Hey Stallion, there is a cover on the front of my muncie that covers a bearing inside the front of the transmission. This cover also has a shaft that fits over the spline that goes from the transmission into the crank. The throw out bearing rides on this shaft.

Hey John, I thought that it only fit one way. Now the problem there is no gasket at all anywhere. I thought it was odd. I was looking for an O-ring or seal. Who might sell these for 30 year old transmissions? I can always make a gasket.

Thanks for the info. Peace Bud

Silly me

Hey John, I should of checked before I posted a reply. Just pulled the cover off and yep, sure 'nuff there's the gasket properly installed and everything.

Thanks for being here for guys like me. Bud

Item #1 in the attached diagram is the front bearing retainer; it covers the rear portion of the input shaft, and the tubular-shaped front portion of it is what the throwout bearing rides back and forth on.
