CLUTCH INSTALL 1958

JohnZ said:
No, it won't. Also, make sure it's counterbore-machined for the outside-installed clutch fork ball stud with 13/16"-16 threads and a round head with a female hex drive (see photo below); that same casting number was also machined for a smaller 7/16" thread inside-installed ball stud for passenger cars and trucks. The photos you sent me of the old iron bellhousing show the outside-installed ball stud - that's what you want to see on a 3733365 bellhousing for use on a Corvette. Paragon has the clutch fork you need, and the ball stud.

i will check for the 13/16"thread and head.what a bummer if its wrong!

Nope, because the same raw CASTING number was machined into two different finished PART numbers (for the two different stud configurations), and the PART number didn't appear anywhere on the bellhousing - only on the box it came in. Only the CASTING number (and the casting date) appears on the bellhousing.

If the housing is machined for the inside-installed 7/16"-threaded stud, it has to be re-machined from the outside for the correct #3729000 outside-installed stud with 13/16"-16 threads and a counterbore so the round head on the stud is flush with the rear surface of the bellhousing; your average machine shop may or may not have a 13/16"-16 tap - have never seen that thread used anywhere except for clutch ball studs. Two photos below of the 3729000 ball stud.

you made it perfectly clear john!thanks as always for your expert opinions.
i manage a industrial machine shop and if i have to i have a guy that works for me that could handle the job.
p.s. i took your advise and just spent $200.00 on clutch parts for my 58 from paragon.
