Clutch Issue on my '67

I acquired my first Vette in 2000, a '67 convertible. It had a clutch chatter problem during normal engagements. I learned to avoid the chatter by reving the engine a little more than normal during starts. A couple of of years ago, I had a shop that specializes in Vette's install a new clutch, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, and they turned the flywheel. The clutch chatter is still present. My mechanic commented that the pilot bushing in the flywheel was severely damaged.

I'm about to tackle the job myself and see if I can resolve. I plan to send the transmission to a rebuild service (am guessing that this may be a problem inside the transmission).

Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated.

I had a chatter and slipping problem with my clutch. My clutch pedal was very stiff. The problem may have stemmed from an oil leak that started at the rear of the intake manifold. Oil ran down the back of the block and found its way into the bell housing. Overall the clutch was shot. I’m sure it endured many years of abuse.

Although your transmission may need a rebuild, the chatter is most likely in the clutch. I believe clunking or grinding would be a transmission problem.

Good luck with your project.

Thanks for the response.

Thanks for the pictures. I can see why that clutch had an issue. I didn't see the inside of mine the first time it was replaced but the mechanic said it was dry inside the bell housing.

Thanks again for the input.

Does the chatter go away or change when you depress the clutch pedal?

The chatter is only there briefly during release of the clutch.

The first thing to verify when you get a clutch chatter issue is the engine mounts and the transmission mount; if they deteriorate or separate internally, the result is clutch chatter.

JohnZ, thanks for the reply. I replaced the motor mounts and transmission mount a couple of years ago. I'd like to get this on a lift somewhere and look at it during the engagement to see if anything external is shaking. I haven't had any luck finding someone that would let me do this.
