A few weeks ago, if I would press my clutch down to the floor, I would hear a small grinding noise. To remedy this, I would not press it down all the way to the floor.

However, on the way back from a weekend getaway, it now grinds if I barely touch the clutch. Luckily I was only a few miles from the house. Just to clarify, when I press the clutch to change gears, it grinds as if I am missing the gear. It grinds even with the I am in Nuetral.

Can anyone tell me what this could possibly be, before I go to a mechanic.

thanks in advance.

Throwout brg., Pressure Plate{maybe} The transmission HAS to come out Anyway!!!!!! Check it all!!!!!!!!!!! Do it correctly the first time so you dont have to go back in a second time. Good Luck!!:(

Sounds too me like a hydraulic problem. Ck fluid level and/or slave cylinder. But whatever you end up doing...do it fast!! The longer you keep grinding, the closer you get to gear failure internally.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I haven't driven it since the problem has become so extreme.

I was just reluctant to take it to a mechanic, and not have some idea of what the problem could be.

As always, thanks for all of the advice. This forum has yet to let me down!!!

Your clutch fork pivot bolt has backed out and allows the fork to hit the pressure plate. I just fixed my problem at 88K miles last month. It is not an uncommon problem. I suppose you have fixed it by now. If not, make sure you loctite the bolt into the bell housing to 30 pounds torque, then apply loctite (one drop only) to the set screw on the other side and torque to 18?.

This is the exact noise and problem I had and found the pivot ball was working its way into the bell housing and the lock on the other side fell out when I pulled the trans back.
