i,m new in the vette world, i have a 77 stingray with a 350 motor and 350 trans. i have a big block 454 and a turbo 400 i would like to put in, can anyone let me know if i can and how much modifcation will i get into? thanks bill

The big block will drop right in. Your problems will be hood clearance,front accessories, and possibly new front coil springs.

The big-block and the 400 will "drop-in", but you need to make sure the big-block has a corvette intake manifold and corvette exhaust manifolds. You also need the Corvette type water pump, accessory bracketry and a big-block hood.

big block

thanks for getting back to me, i've been out of town for a couple of days, or i would have replied sooner. the info gives me a lot to think about changing the hood and the front parts, i think i will re think the job. thanks again, bill

Don't give up just yet. The stock 77 hood is a little taller than the earlier sharks,so you should be able to get away with a stock intake. If you are not running A/C, the front accessory brackets shouldn't be a big deal. Maybe just a simple trip to the junkyard.

Small Block ---> Big Block

Clutchbuster, one main variable you need to consider is the effect of the added weight in the front end with the new big block --- assuming both engines are cast iron. The difference is ~100, 150 lbs ... Hib, Jane Ann please check my data here. The added weight will affect your handling, tires and suspension to some degree.

You'll have more room in the engine bay to work on it when needed with the small block.

Just a few items.... :w

hi its me again, still up in the air, how about the turbo 400 trans its a short tail shaft but still seams tobe longer by about 2.5 in. the best i can figure the 350 turbo still in the car. any ideas? thanks bill

If the Turbo 350 is in good condition and the 454 is on the mild side,I would just keep the 350 in there. If it breaks then you have the 400 as a replacement.

Good advise! At performance rpms a TH350 can consume 27Hp compared to the TH400 48hp loss. The TH350 was rated at 350 lb/ft torque as the TH400 was at 400 lb/ft. The parasitic loss winners of the past, Slip and Slide PowerGlide at 11hp and the Muncies' that were hard to even mearsure. Good Luck on your project
