Did the code check...turned up only one - code 43. I know this is the knock sensor, and I have heard it ping during its stumble and cut out fits - but it doesn't make sense with all the symptoms. The (haynes) manual says (in a round about way) that it can fail two ways...full advance, giving no retarding action - or full retard, giving no advance. This certainly makes sense...but...failing in full retard would give very poor power and feel sluggish - I don't have that problem at all - the car still rips. Plus - I've heard pinging, so that leads me to think it is hard over in full advance....but that doesn't make sense with the rough low idle, I would expect the idle to be high ??? Thoughts, suggestions, comments ?

Thanks,
Rob

Well folks, anybody able to help Rob? :confused

You need to start by checking the ESC fuse. If it is good, check for voltage at the ESC module. It is mounted on the right side of the blower motor at the rear passenger side of the engine compartment. If there is voltage there, disconnect the knock sensor and check for five volts to the sensor. If the voltage is there, check the other side of the knock sensor wiring with an AC voltmeter. You will have to watch, or get an assistant to watch very closely and see if it moves while you hit the engine or exhaust manifold on the right side of the engine with a hammer. This is, of course, with ignition on, but engine off.

If all this checks out, you will have to find the connection at the ECM that comes from the ESC. It should go low whenever the knock sensor is activated.

Full advance will not necessarily speed up the idle.

Good luck,
