Just completed a major overhaul 3 weeks ago on my 88 L98. When to a 383 stroker, accell super ram, Z-11 cam, headers, roler rockers, ported and & polished plenum, 24 lb. injectors 52 mm throttle body, flowmasters, etc., etc.

I went through the break-in period (900 miles on the new build) and yesterday I had to make a trip across the desert from Phoenix to Palm Springs. About 100 miles out, I felt a small surge or something like that and the "Service Engine Soon" light came on. I got into Palm Springs and the car was idling very badly and even died at one point. I finished my client meeting and when I started the engine back up the light did not come on and the car ran normally with a smooth idle. A little later when I was going back to Phoenix it came back on.

When I arrived home last night I checked the codes and found a 32 and 33. My code reader book says 32 is "Barometric Pressure EGR valve diagnostic switch closed during engine start-up or open when EGR flow requested by ECM. I put a new EGR valve on the car during the rebuild. I took a quick look at the vacuum lines out of the EGR and everything seems to be fine. Any way to diagnose the EGR to see if it is working?

Code 33 shows "Mass Air Flow sensor signal voltage or frequency is high at engine idle." It also talks about an MAP sensor, but I think that was for 84 and 91-94 Vettes. Mine is an 88.

Since both of these codes have something to do with idle and the car's idle was terrible when the codes were own, what could the trouble be. Does anyone have any ideas or can you point me to any threads that talk about either code?

Thanks a bunch.

Mike

Check the wires going into the relay connectors, I was gettting similar symptoms and codes, and it turned out that the insulation had shrunk back exposing bare wires, so the codes were not always there, until I had driven the car for a while.

As soon as the wires touched I would get the codes.

Never know, can't hurt to look.

same here

Found bared wires on my MAF wires right at the connector but no code for it. Had a 32 and am hoping it was vacuum leak and /or bad EGR. Go to www.C4vettes and click on in depth info then go to ECM codes. Might find your answer there. Its a good site for newbies like me.
