Question folks...when I start my 81 (dead cold) winter months, I press the accelerator pedal once I here the choke plate close...it fires right up...BUT the rpm's start to climb close to 2000, Way to high.
Soooo I rotate the electric choke dial towards the front of the car so it wouldnt slam shut all the way...now I have to pump the pedal a few times to start...but the rpm's still want to climb to high.
Whats the fix????

PS. and thanks for the help with the check engine light...all's good there.

Mine maxes out at 2200 on high step. I like it it runs good just of the high step when I drive away before the choke comes all the way off then it idles 650 ind and 775 in neutral.

Just my .02

You need to find out first what speed it should idle at when cold. Over 2000 sounds high, maybe 1500-1700 is more appropriate.

Turning the electric choke housing is not the right thing to do as you have found. Put it back where it was (just barely closed when dead cold) and find the high idle cam on the choke linkage. There is a separate adjustment for controlling throttle opening when the cam is engaged.

2000 sounds right to me. My impala idles right around there with the fast idle on. I think your running about perfect.

Thanks for the feedback...yea I agree turning the electric choke dial wasn't the correct move and I'll put it back tomorrow. I'll have to look for the high idle cam on the choke linkage.
I'd like to get it down to 1500 dead cold...but 2000 I ain't likeing.
After warm up it comes right down to 6-700 and thanks to the new 02 sensor really idles and runs awsome.
Thanks again....great Forum for sure.
