Can somebody please clear up what is used for the bottom of the Exhaust Systems on the mid-years, especially the 1963. I have seen originals and it looks like somebody used a swab of some type and applied (swabbed on) a black protective paint of some type. Can somebody please explain what this is, and how does one go about reproducing this>>>many thanks.

If my memory serves me correctly, that was part of the blackout process. The factory used black paint that was "wiped on" with a sponge or rag. I am not sure exactly how you could reproduce the paint. You might try asking this same question on the NCRS discussion board,

You'll get a lively debate going on this one - the commonly accepted "urban legend" is that the C2 exhaust system was somehow "mitted" with chassis blackout paint; never happened (I was there). C2's had nowhere near the chassis blackout coverage seen on C1's, and in both cases the application of the cheap blackout paint was done with an airless spray gun with the chassis right-side-up, just before Body Drop. Coverage varied widely, but it was sprayed, not "mitted".
