Color of Your Coolant???

'96 LT4 - what color should the fluid be when viewed in the plastic tank? Don't take that as a stupid question but I've never seen the "DexCool" stuff.

dexcool stuff is orange.

The '96 came with Dexcool. It will have a reddish-orange color. What is in yours depends of course on whether the Dexcool has been replaced.

Good To Know

Thought I had a serious rusting radiator problem for a second. What are the features and benefits of DexCool and does it need to be replaced/flushed periodically?

Depends on who you ask. Some love it, some cuss it. DexCool is supposed to be a 100,000 mile/5 year antifreeze that is less abrasive to water pumps and presumably provides better corrosion inhibitors. However DexCool has been the source for much litigation and class action lawsuits. There is a ton of data out there on DexCool, good and bad. So Google away and take EVERYTHING you read with a dose of caution. If yours is original or you don't know how long it has been in, you probably should flush and refill.

I've looked around the web and I've come across a lot of threats of lawsuits, both individual and class action, and I've not come across anyone that was substantiated.

I'm one of the guys that swear by DexCool. My 1999 Buick Regal just turned 5 and had it's first coolant system flush and refill with DexCool. The inside of the system was just about perfect. My 92 has been using DexCool for years. When it was torn down for cam work late last year, the interior of the cooling passages were like new and the water pump showed no signs of leaking.

DexCool is a reddish-orange color. There are other long-life coolants brands out there that are similar to DexCool and are compatible with DexCool.

About the only thing I have found is that air in the system can lead to problems with the cooling system and contamination. If you are losing coolant, it's better to find the leak and fix it rather than just add water/coolant.

I'm gone now.
