Column Lock Recall Thread

Yeah there are three threads.

One in C5 general.
One in C5 tech.
One in Z06 General.

I suggest the title of the thread be changed to Column Lock Recall Thread and combine them all and put them in the C5 general. It is getting crazy, just like me!!!!!! :D

I got my recall letter yesterday. I am going to call the dealer today to make an appointment.

Sidetracked would be a bit of an understatement. Is your current Vette under this recall??????????????
Actually, I'm vette-less at the moment, a situation I have to correct real soon.

Is the Z06 any good? I might get a black one, and call myself theblackvette.

You ask if the Z06 is any good????????

Man-You are lucky you are on the other coast. Because if I were there, I would have smacked you by now, since you haven't been to the dealership yet to test drive one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now get out there and drive it. They are open in the evenings and weekends. Quit screwing around!!!!!!!! :L

The Z06 is the ultimate in Corvette performance. And the things you can do to it are endless!!!!!!!!!!!!

;LOL BV - you know I have to wait for my wife to go shopping with me. She considers shopping -- oops, I mean Shopping -- to be the ultimate leisure time activity and extreme sport. Besides, she really wants to test drive a Z06.

I'll let you know if the Z06 is any good.:D

steering column lock recall

My '98 Did The Steering Column Lock About 2 Months Ago...had To Call The Tow Truck And $487.00 Later I Was On The Road. I Bought The Car Used And Havent Recieved A Letter Yet. The Mechanic At The Dealership Called Today To Get My Vin Numbers And He Was Going To Run It And See If Mine Is On The List. My Question Is If It Is Will The Dealership Reimburse Me For The Repair?? I Could Sure Use It...

Just got my recall today on my 99. Also included is a claim form to apply for re-imbursement. You might try calling 1-800-630-2438 between 8a and 11p EST M-F and see if they will send you the info.

My GM Owner's Link web account notified me last week. I have an appointment set for Friday to get the work done. I decided I wouldn't wait for the recall notice to reach by mail.

Same here, and the letter followed early this week. It's proven to be a handy site: https://www.mygmlink.com/

Hi folks -

I just received my recall notice. I will disregard the recall - I have not had any problem with my Z and I do not intend to let a dealer reflash the PCM - I had Breathless do this and I do not relish the idea of the dealership overwriting my perf upgrades and cags elimination etc.

best regards -

GM Recall 04006

I'm going in Monday at 9am

I sure hope they have any parts needed! I will also wait at the dealership while the work is performed!!!

Hi Gusvette. Just to let you know, the dealer will have to order the necessary parts for this recall after you make your appt at the dealer. I work at GMSPO (service parts) and we have been shipping out these campaign parts for a while now. And, YES I did get mine Thursday for my '04 Z. Fortunately my dealer only has to drive across town to get the parts, so mine gets done on Monday.

That's odd, my 04 don't have a column lock.

Thanks Ron,
I'm going to cancel my appointment. I don't want to be the first one they do. If they don't have the part I know I don't want to leave my Z06 at the dealer. I'm also going to check into the "clb" (Column Lock Bypass)

A Word To Folks Getting the Steering Column Lock "Fix"

Because I got the recall notice via the GM Owner's Link account I got set up, I actually had the work taken care of a day before I received the notice in the mail. :D

Now, there is something about this that all of you should know- and this is real important if anyone has had a Diablo Predator or similar type of reprogramming module done as a modification to their car. Part of the "Fix" to this problem involves a wipe of the PCM (Program Control Module) in the car to its original factory settings. Basically, the PCM is the car's central computer.

If you have done any after-market programming, you will need to go in and return the settings you programmed back to factory original. The process being used in these recall fixes wipes/permanently overwrites any after-market programming done, and worse, makes it so that you can't reprogram using the same controller. In essense, what ever money you've spent will be lost if you don't reset the PCM to it's factory original settings, because the process they use renders the device you used to install that after-market programming useless in the future.

I learned this first hand. The previous owner of my vehicle had done some programming using a Predator Diablo. All of that got wiped in my car's system, and for the first time since I purchased the car, driving it home Friday from the dealer after the recall work was done, I got a "Shift From 1st to 4th" message on my dash. That had never happened before. And in order to reprogram around it, I'm going to have to buy a new Predator Diablo programmer- the previous changes have been over-written, permanently.

Just a word to the wise.

I posted about this in the C5 General Discussion forum, but I'll re-iterate here. This is important news.

If you have used a Predator Diablo or similar device to reprogram your car (for shifting or other purposes), BEFORE you go into the dealer to get this recall issue fixed, you need to go back and return all your settings to factory original. This is extremely important if you don't want to feel like you've thrown away the money spent on your programmer.

The process being used wipes all after-market program, and uses a method that permanently over-writes the after-market programming device such that it cannot be used ever again.

Don't ya just love computer protocols? :eyerole

Definitely a Word to the Wise !

Hello All ! :w

Wouldn't you know, I spent all day on the Dyno having a Predator installed in my car, then get home with all my new found power, only to find my GM Recall notice in the mailbox ! I will uninstall my tune prior to taking the car in, to avoid the wipe out of my tune ! Only picked up 6 HP after 6 pulls, however my AFR was WAY out of whack, so my baby is definitely running better now !

I'm about to attempt this. Everyone hold your breath.

When someone actually gets this done, let us know what the results are and how much of the car they took apart. LOL.

I'll get mine done, but I'm NOT going first.

Let us know.
Thanks.
