Column Lock Recall Thread

Nice work!

Admittedly, this was nice work! I am impressed! You deserve a thank you, as I gave up reading those threads. It was getting nuts. There is actually a FOURTH one somewhere. If you find it you may want to include that one to.

Now if you can somehow hack into the ebay website and eliminate that nonsense I reported in my ebay thread on how some items on ebay should be banned then you will be my savior!!!!!!!!

:L

MsSchroder, shall now be called, "Doctor MsSchroder"!

Good work! Can you fix everything? If you can, I've got this pain.... HAHA.

Bill.:cool

Patrick, that is VERY good info to know.

And thank you BV and Smook. It was my first merge. Therefore, I am no longer a merge virgin. :L
It took 6 minutes. Looks like I need some more practice.

BV, if you run into the other thread let me know.
Anyway, I got the letter yesterday. I must have dreamed I got it before.

I want to know about the Column Lock Bypass. Is this the same thing that GM describes for automatic transmissions as "removing the column lock"?

For manual transmissions, this is not something that GM offers, right? It does not sound like part of the no-charge correction. Honestly, I can't even figure out why I should even go in for this "repair" for a manual trans, except to check out the lock plate clearance.

I want to know more about the part about reprogramming my PCM. How? why? what will it change? The letter from GM described the problem occurring if the voltage at the PCM is low or interrupted, the fuel may not shut off. So what is the PCM fix? How will fixing the PCM get more voltage to it, in order for it to shut off the fuel?

I just can't see the benefit in losing several hours of my day to go do this. I would appreciate any insight on why I should.

Right behind you, BV.

What are the consequences down the road if you don't have the recall work done? I plan to install a CLB and see no need to take the chance of the dealer possibly screwing my car up.

You are welcome. I hope you merge in traffic as well as you do on CAC. By the way did you finish vacuuming?

Will do.

Correct. You may have to pay money. However, you have 60 days to claim reimbursement in the enclosed recall notice form. I would imagine they will give you your money back.

Beats the hell out of me??????

Here is some insight! Do you value your life? On one hand it seems you have been an asset to society, therefore many people would be sad if you dissapear! However, on the other hand, there would be one less Bulldog in the world. Although this is a nice thought, I rather keep you around. So go get it fixed. Unless you want to risk having your steering column lock up and smash into a tree??????? The choice is yours!!!!! :D

Tammy- excellent call on merging the threads. I wish I'd thought of that, actually. It would have saved me time chasing threads all over the C5 forums. I guess this recall is pretty universal in its effect.

Regarding the inconvenience to your schedule, virtually all Chevy dealers make available a shuttle service so that you drop you car off, be taken to work, and then be picked later in the day to retrieve your car. You do not need to wait there- I chose to do that, because I had things I had a variety of places to go once the car was ready.

How about giving credit where credit is due?????? :D

I'll do some checking.
First, let me apologize to the thread for perhaps further confusing the recall issues here on CAC. I know there are multiple threads relating to the ECL (electronic column lock) campaign.

I did do some checking on the "other" recall which has been rumored in places. This is what GM spokesperson, Jim Schell, told me back on 7/6.

GM alerted NHTSA that it plans to conduct a field action involving
approximately 9,000 model year 2004 Corvettes. Some of these Corvettes,
along with approximately 20,000 Cadillac CTS, 13,000 Cadillac SRX, and
1,200 Cadillac XLR vehicles, have lower control arm ball stud/washer
assemblies with washers made of the wrong steel material. The washers may
fracture and become loose or fall away from the vehicle. This could cause
separation of the lower control arm from the knuckle, resulting in loss of
vehicle control. GM has not announced the mailing date of owner
notification letters. Dealers will inspect the vehicles. If the torque of
the nut for the lower control arms is not at specification, the dealers
will replace the ball stud, the knuckle, and the nut. If the torque is at
specification, the dealers will replace the nut/washer assembly only.

There have been no reports of crashes or injuries related to this
condition. There were four incidents of the condition in the field. None
of them were Corvettes.
This morning I reconfirmed this with Mr. Schell and, further, learned that notices will begain to go out to owners on or about 8/25/04

Mr. Halverson,

Thank you for getting back with that info on the washer issue. That sounds worse than the column lock problem.

Now another question for everyone about the column lock:
Has there ever been any evidence that the steering column locks AFTER the car is in motion? It is my understanding that the lock occurs when the car is turned off, and the problem occurs when the column does not unlock when the car is started.
In this case, I only have to worry about being able to stop the car if the wheel is locked, when backing out of my garage at 2 mph. I won't be crashing into any trees in this case ;)

I finally got the steering lock recall notice for my Z06 today (8/4/04). For all you still waiting..be patient. They will get to you
==========================================================
Not all '04's will get the colum lock recall...you can find out by calling GM and telling them your VIN number...I did and was told that there was not a recall for mine...mine was built in mid April '04 and they told me that there were many problems in the early '04's but by mid April those problems were corrected..thus no recalls on mine so far...and btw, I was also told by many sources that my '04 A4 didn't even have a colum lock...go figure...when I put it in park and take the key out...the wheel does not even lock.....:)

Thanks Ron,
I'm going to cancel my appointment. I don't want to be the first one they do. If they don't have the part I know I don't want to leave my Z06 at the dealer. I'm also going to check into the "clb" (Column Lock Bypass)
Gus:(
I did the CLB. It only takes a few minutes and only really requires that you remove the lower panel of the drivers side dash. It's just a little box that you plug in in place of the column's solenoid. Cost around $99 at most places.

When someone actually gets this done, let us know what the results are and how much of the car they took apart. LOL.

I'll get mine done, but I'm NOT going first.

Let us know.
Thanks.

Hi Bill and All,

Had the recall done. Got lucky with a dealer that let me wait for my car. I was in-n-out in an hour. For my car, all they had to do was reprogram my PCM. As the car was not performance tuned, as others who had previously posted were, I had no problems with this. Also, on other M/T cars, I have learned that a jumper harness has to be installed...my car did not need any parts.

Hope this helps.

All the best,

1 :w

I was getting ready to have my 99 CL recall addressed tomorrow when I saw this thread. We bought our 99 last year and it already had an LS1Edit installed on the car. Now I'm not sure if I want to have the service done and loose that programming. This fix also includes recalibration information for the fuel system which I would like to get as well though I haven't had any issues in some time. Decisions, decisions...

Finally made appointment for the recall fix for this morning. It took 2 hours, from 7:30 until 9:30. Got the car home and the easy entry, where seat moves back, did not work. Anyone have this happen? I tried to reprogram it in the DIC but it would not accept it. I then realized the seat and mirror memory option does not work either. A call back to the service department confirmed that another computer program needs to be made with both sets of keys! The recall reprogram erased that function. I'm afraid to return the car for fear that they'll erase something else....aaarrrggghhh! :eyerole

Returned the car today and they were able to quickly remedy the lost seat memory. Apparently there are separate modules that can get unplugged when the recall fix is made. When you get the car back after the recall fix, be sure to check the memory.
