My very good friend is looking at purchasing a 1974 L82 4-speed vert and asked me a few questions that I could not answer. Please offer some advice as I think I want him to get a Vette as bad as he wants to get one!
He took the car in for an inspection before making any sort of hasty decision (unlike my purchasing decisions). Overall the car got very high marks from the person with a few concerns about the original engine. My friend just sent me the following in an e-mail and we would both value your opinions. Here is what he wrote…
___________________________________________________________
1974 L82 matching numbers no mods
Original 4-bbl / intake / valve covers / air cleaner / manifolds / exhaust
Compression test results:
(From the drivers seat to the front)
Left 1: 100
Left 2: 90
Left 3: 80
Left 4: 80
Right 1: 75
Right 2: 70
Right 3: 60
Right 4: 60
The mechanic says +/- 10 is typical using non-computerized testing
The car has been in storage approx 1-3 yrs
Mechanic recommends valve job and maybe complete overhaul / rebuild
Other:
Car drives excellent
Pulls strong to redline
No smoke at start or any running speeds
Slight oil buildup on back of pan and bell housing (rear main seal?)
No leaks hitting the floor
