1982 corvette collector edition
I have been told by my machanic that my computer and PROM are ruined. I can find rebuilt computers but I can not find the PROM or anyone to repair mine. I have been told the PROM is made for each individual car. I have owned this car since '84. What can I do? :confused

PROMs were not created for individual cars. You could consider an aftermarket PROM. My advice would be to search the internet for a used 82 computer and PROM or look into the possibility of having your computer rebuilt.

Good luck.

:)

Like Mike says, try to look for a used 82 ECM with Prom.
Of course you can't use a 81 corvette prom and also not a 82 camaro prom for example.

Greetings Peter

When your mechanic said the PROM and the computer were "ruined" did he elaborate as to what exactly happened or do you know what happened?

What happened to ruined ecm and prom

He said they got wet from me washing the car

Normally the prom is ok. Usually the computer goes bad due to age with cold soldier joints or actual rust inside the box. For around 100 bucks you can get a rebuilt computer from NAPA parts (I paid around that last time). All Re-manufactured ones will come with NO prom. They originals are very scarce.

Uh....the PROM is inside the ECM and the ECM in an 82 is inside the battery compartment behind the driver seat. Do you have major water leaks in your doors or hatch?

I'm going to bet the PROM might actually be ok because it's just an IC that goes into a holder which plugs into a socket in the ECM. The computer might be able to be rebuilt. There are a few vendors around the country which do that. Try searching with Google.

Even better -- why does he think there is something wrong with the computer -- was there a check engine light on constantly -- could you get the 12 code when the test lead was shorted or did nothing happen. Did he get to a "fried computer" using the proper corrective actions from the corvette shop manual?

Sorry to seem as if I distrust a mechanic, but I have had my computer and carburetor declare DOA when in reality it was a mechanic that did not understand the CCC of an 81 corvette. I fixed that by educating myself and doing the work myself. Let me know if there is anything I can do.
