Had my car out for a short drive drive yesterday - mostly city driving. Got looking at the temperature gauge and noticed that it would move past 220 mark and then move back to the 190 area. Pulled up the read out on the DIC display and watched. The temperature at one point went as high as 232 and then would begin to retract back to the 190's. I know that the temperature variances a contolled by the two fans (1-for high speed operation and 2-for low speed operation) which are wired in series via the PCM.

It's probably fine but I'm just not accustomed to seeing coolant temps move much higher than 200 degree. Any thoughts

I had a similar problem when the car was new. The dealer had to replace my PCM at 965 miles because it was not getting proper temp readings. Would bounce between 190 / overtemp / 220 / 190

i think that temp is about right.the 2 fans run in low then they will both kick into high about 230*,if the a/c is on the fans will run continuously,my car does exactly what your car does.if your not getting codes and check engine/high temp alarms your ok.im getting ready to do the thermostat mod and order the fan controller to kick the fans on much sooner, there is a big difference in my 1/4 mile times when the temps are 195*vs 230*, 3 tenths difference.:eek i want to keep it between 180*-185*,later Todd.

Under Pressure

Tod,

Now that I've done a little more research, I agree with your comments. The newer Vettes, like many newer cars, have a much higher coolant system pressure. And if you remember your chemistry class - the higher the pressure, the higher the boiling point. Also running the engine temperatures a little higher aids in lower emissions. I was pretty sure all was well and I appriciate your valuable input.

Now about that lower temp thermostat - Yes you will get better E.T's at the drags. But I think you'll also get lower fuel economy. But as they say you can't have it all.

The temp in C5's will rise when you are sitting at a stand still and go down as you drive. As long as the temp goes down, it is normal.

Remo - mine runs 190 - 195 except when stuck in traffic; then it will go up to 220's. This is normal. I usually turn on the ac in traffic to lower the coolant temperature.

Hell or High Water

Steve,

That's exactly what the Chevy dealer said to do. It gets both the fans running at full and does the job. It definetly takes some getting used to when for most of your life you think in terms of 190 desgrees come hell or high water. Thanks for the feed back.
