This is the primary reason.... cats act as a resonator.
Thanks. I noticed some years ago that using a 'test pipe' made my car louder.

I just changed tips, cutting off the too-long (and ugly) Flowmaster tips; replaced with chrome angle-tips. There was no change in interior sound. Recall that the original tips stuck out quite a bit, while these new ones are just visible (nice!) below the rear bumper.

I noticed that having the glass top IN the car, versus ON the car really reduces resonance. We had some rain, which I drove in (sorry). I found quite a bit of resonance, as this is the first time in about 3 1/2 years the top has been on the car.

The exhaust shop owner does a fair number of various aftermarket mufflers and claims that Flowmaster resonance is a result of their squarish 'can' vibrating inside the rear hollow area of these Vettes. That would counter any claims of resonance reduction due to the tips sticking our farther. My (new) experience seems to validate this.

Does that then mean that eliminating the mufflers on a stock system would not cause resonance inside , due to there being nothing to vibrate ?

It appears that's what it would be. At least that's what I would make out of what WhalePirot said.

Are you going to eliminate the mufflers?

everyone has different tastes. What sounds great to me might be too loud for you.

Ask around at your local Corvette Club. Listen to as many different combo's as possible and then make your decision.

welcome to the :CAC

I agree, you need to check out as many as you can and find the one that sounds right for you. Personnaly, I like the sound and performance of Flowmaster.

Plan on giving it a try, befor I spend money on new turbo muflers. A sports car that goes SSSSSSSSS just doesn't get it . ;LOL

I hadn't thought about that, as I have never considered straight pipes. Personally, I'd rather have the best of both worlds by keeping the Flowmasters while driving with the top in the back of the car, where it belongs!

The exhaust note would be too loud for me, having once tried (for free) a pair of Monza exhaust pipes with my stock engine. Just like the guy who gave them to me, I took them off and gave them away, being way too loud.

Listening around is a cheap way to shop intelligently.

I was just like you when I wanted to abolish the stock exhaust. I finally went with Magnaflow. If you love a deep tone, with minimal resonance, it's the system for you. I always get compliments on how it sounds. I hear the Corsa system is nice, but it only sounds good at wide open throttle; Magnaflow sounds good at idle and wide open.
Search and listen until u find whats pleasing. I know I'm satisfied.
