I'm interested in knowing the major differences in the Corvette 235 from '53 & '54 vs a standard Powerglide 235. I have some knowledge (a dangerous thing!) but would like the experts to confirm the following:

1) Sidedraft Carter carbs, Dual exhaust (obvious)
3) Hotter cam (rumored to be same grind as 261 L6 - ?)
4) Offset water pump
5) Solid lifters ( knowledge base specs say hydraulics )

Some other things I've heard but can't confirm:

1) Heavier valve springs
2) different distributor (dual point?)
3) Higher compression ( but from piston configuration, or smaller combustion chamber volume, or maybe both?)
3) Very careful blueprinted assembly

Aware of different cylinder head and block casting numbers - But assume these are mainly for different accessory mount location, not high performance.

Any responses will be greatly appreciated...Thanks in advance!

Yes to the first 4 items on your list. Regarding the second 4 items, I would assume heavier springs because of the solid lifter cam. The distributor was single point, but unique because of the tach drive. The higher compression came from both the pistons and cylinder head. I can't speak about "careful blueprinting"...knowing Chevrolet, I doubt this. :) Hope this helps. Chuck

Valve springs

The head has dual valve springs. It also has some tapped holes for the rad exp. tank. THe oil pan is different. THe pass car has a 2 step design and the vette has a three step design to clear the tie rod ends.

Please exspain what you guys are talking about?

PS WELCOME aboard

Larry,

I'm betting they're discussing the differences between the 235c.i. 6 in the Corvette and the 235c.i. 6 with Powerglide in the full-size Chevy.

Mind you, once the cubes get below 396 my eyes start to glaze over. ;LOL j/k

There is a lot in common with a 'regular' passenger 235 PWG longblock + head and the 150hp 235 monster that resides in a 53/54/ (and yes maybe up to 8 55s). The differences are subtle and expensive. The PWGs have different tailshafts that are tough to find. Eric
