Looking for Number Eight

attachment.php

Since 1923, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the most grueling, prestigious sports car endurance race in the world — has served up heartbreak and triumph.

Triumph is better. The factory-backed Chevrolet Corvette race team has tasted its share since returning to Le Mans in full force in 2001, and has won seven times. The two-car Corvette team goes for number eight on June 22-23 at the 8.5-mile Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France, and you can have the best seat in the house since both cars will have live onboard cameras for the entire race, available by logging onto speedtv.com/corvette. And you can follow live updates on Twitter @CorvetteRacing.

We can promise you this: There will be no shortage of action and drama. Competition in the 56-car field is invariably fierce and this year is no different. The LMGTE class the Corvette C6.R competes in is populated by Ferraris, Aston Martins, Porsche 911s and Dodge Vipers.

The six-driver Corvette lineup for the 2013 race is the same as last year. Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia of the American Le Mans Series will be driving the number 73 Corvette C6.R, joined by GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series Daytona Prototype driver Jordan Taylor, fresh from a win in his Corvette in the Chevrolet GRAND-AM 200 in Detroit.

In the number 74 Corvette, it’s 2012 ALMS GT co-champions Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin, joined by Richard Westbrook, another GRAND-AM Rolex Series Corvette driver.

Battling back from a two-lap deficit, Gavin, Milner and Westbrook teamed up for the GT class win in their Corvette at the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring last March, a race considered to be prime preparation for Le Mans. Garcia and Magnussen also have momentum, winning their class at the most recent ALMS race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in May. Gavin already has four class wins at Le Mans, as does Magnussen. Garcia has three, while Milner has one. Taylor and Westbrook are looking for their first Le Mans victory.

“Le Mans is the one race you should never underestimate,” says Doug Fehan, program manager for the race team since its inception. “That race gets tougher every time you run it. But we’re ready.”

Ride onboard the Corvette C6.Rs for the entire 24 hours at speedtv.com/corvette beginning June 22 at 9:00AM EDT and follow live updates on Twitter @CorvetteRacing
