Afraid I don't have any sage advice other than to do whatever makes you happy. Should you decide to go high tech and replace the radio, I'm in the market for an original replacement for my aftermarket cassette model. E-mail me if you're interested in selling. I have a '66. I just need to check on whether there are any subtle a differences between the '65 and '66 radios (I don't think there are).
