Has anyone had their 6-Speed's Clutch and Flywheel replaced recently, and if so what did it cost you?

I would especially like to hear from people from the DC/Baltimore/Frederick area.

Thanks

The six speed has the dual mass flywheel. If you need a flywheel those are very rather exspencive. I have read somewhere on the forum that they can be had for about $600.

With a 89 you have a dual-mass flywheel ... pricey in itself! ... and, sadly, the shop manual says the dual-mass must be replaced (and not resurfaced) if in a worn condition.

So with that said I would like to add an addendum to your original question ... "What constitutes a "bad" dual-mass? ... and can a slightly wore flywheel be "touch-sanded"?.

There is a company on the web that resurfaces dual mass flywheels. Do a google search and you should find them.

GM says not to resurface. But, these guys say, if done properly, no big deal!

I say check it out.

Maybe also call the zf doc for his opinion.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately I think my flywheel will need replacement, after engaging 2, or 3rd I hear a lot of grinding (like someone stirring a bucket of sand) and the car slowly gets up to speed.

When I first bought the car 2 years ago, the clutch slipped a little but now it is so noticeable that I'm afraid that it will leave me stranded.

I've seen the Dual Mass flywheel for some serious cash, I'll have to find the online store selling it for $600.

I'm estimating the total cost of having a shop replacing the flywheel and clutch at least $3000, seeing that shop labor in this area is so expensive. :-(

When you get your clutch replaced It would be appreciated if you would list and itimized list of the cost. My clutch slips a little if I get it warmed up and am afraid if I abuse it I may have to replace it. I would like to start a repair fund for that and it would be nice to know how much I need to set aside for parts.

You bet. I sold my motorcycle to pay for the repair, so I know what you mean.

That isn't all that bad. I will save the numbers and email addy. When I get some money laid aside I think I will just order the parts and be ready.
thanks.

Well I have my baby back, no ribs jokes please :L , and she sure is sweet.

Fortunately Tony's Corvettes was able to resurface my Dual-mass flywheel mainly because the slippage was being caused by Dot3 leaking into the housing from a bad Master/Slave cylinders. His shop was able to clean everything and install a new clutch for a reasonable price.

Unfortunately my brake's master cylinder decided to go south at the same time so I had Tony fix that as well so the labor cost includes the break job so here is the breakdown...

1 Clutch/ Throwout/Pressure Plate...................497.00
1 Slave Cylinder............................................187.26
1 Clutch M/C................................................214.36
1 Rear Trans Seal...........................................21.81
1 Clutch Fluid..................................................7.00
1 Clutch Braided Line.....................................127.00
1 Air Tube Clamp..............................................7.00
1 10 mm External Studs...................................20.00
2 10 mm Nuts..................................................3.00
6 Clutch Plate Bolts.........................................18.00
Trans Parts Total.........................................1102.43

1 Brake M/C.................................................636.84
4 10 mm Bolts..................................................6.00
2 Brake Fluid..................................................16.00
Sublet Parts...................................................17.00
Brakes Part Total...........................................681.84

Grand Total for Parts....................................1778.27

Sublet Repairs...............................................175.00
Total Labor.................................................1116.00
Sales Tax.......................................................88.91

Total Amount...............................................3158.18

One cool extra that was included is that Tony's took digital photos of the process and included a print out of them for no extra charge. :upthumbs

Sounds like you found an honest mechanic. And a good one. The 1989 Corvette was notorious for leaking slave brake cylinders and the vacuum booster for the power brakes. I had a 89 and both of these items failed. I did dodge having the M/C go out with it. The parts list indicates a very thorough job. Sounds like you are ready for a long and happy relationship with the baby. Good luck and happy Vettin'.
Paul

Thanks!!!
