Courtesy Light Timer

Today, I went for a drive on Christmas day and noticed the courtesy lights would not go out. When the key is turned off or the doors opened, the lights go bright. In about 30 seconds, they go dim but not out. I wonder if the courtesy light timer has go bad? If so, where is it located and who sells a replacement. Also, I smell a faint odor I associate with something hot??? Any ideas?;help
