Here's a bit of a question:

Why does the air chamber have to be part of the hood?

Ponder that, and guess what I'm thinking :)

Does not have to be. Just that if it is part of the hood, it gets itself out of the way when you open the hood. Otherwise you would have to manualy remove it to get to the engine.

NASCAR engines use a cowl induction air cleaner assembly.

I'm thinking something akin to the snorkel air cleaners that came stock, but less restrictive (I've seen this sort of thing from several companies).

Then, build an "air box" at the firewall which would arch upward, following the same shape as the cowl of the hood. Some of the material that separates the engine compartment from the wiper area could be even removed, to create an even larger opening (just have to work around the wiper motor).

A couple accordian hoses to connect the two, and you've got air :)

I'd say that two hoses would work better than one large hose or duct, because it would allow them to go around either side of the distributor, rather than trying to squeeze between the dist and the hood.
