crank sprocket removal

all else aside as far as my engine goes.
how do you get the crank sprocket off.
it just seems stuck. i dont want to pry on it for fear of messing up the crank but other than getting a gear puller and trying that i am not sure how else to do it.

manual says to just pull it off.
yeah that aint happening

I assume you are trying to remove the flywheel.. sometimes they can get rusted on around the centering hole. spray some good penetrating oil (not wd-40, that's not a rust dissolver).everywhere you can where the flywheel touches the crank, even in the bolt holes. wait about an hour then lay a flat piece of wood about 1/3 the way out from center and give it a good hit with a hammer. that should free it up. watch out it dont fall to the floor and bend something.

not the flywheel, the crank sprocket is on the other side of the engine from the flywheel.

You will need a two or three jaw puller, be sure to use a centering plug in the threaded hole in the crank so the threads don't get damaged.

Use a puller. Don't try it any other way. Put the crank snout bolt back in before installing the puller. You want the puller against the bolt head and not against the crank snout.

Woodruff key should come out once the pulley is removed.

i was thinking that but the only other experience i have with this is on a 68 model 289 ford and that sprocket just came right off so i wasnt sure if something was messed up or not.

Just to make this clear- Are you pulling the balancer or the crank timing gear? Either way, you need a puller, but a 3 jaw puller on the balancer is not the answer. That's a plate type puller you use 3 bolts and bolt to the balancer and then a big bolt thru the center.

balancer is already off.

3 jaw puller pulled the timing sprocket ( i guess i should have said gear) off no problem. i just didnt think i would have to resort to tools to get it off.
the last one of these i did came off by pulling on it by hand so i wasnt sure which actual tool i needed.

If the timing gear comes off the crank of a SBC or BBC by hand, you'll be dealing with a host of new problems.

Tip for reinstalling the new gear: Stick it in the oven at 200* for about 20 minutes. Have a short piece of pipe that's just big enough to slip over the crank. Put the key in the crank, put the gear on making sure the chamfer is to the rear, and whack the pipe with a medium size hammer to seat it.
