2003 50th Annversary Red coupe, beautiful !
I was thinking of making a trip from the east coast out to Texas, California and Oragon and back. and I was wondering what your fuel costs were? Parts - tools, What would you recommendations might be? Any advise is welcome. Thanks !

I would bring:

-Quart or two of Mobil1 5w30 oil
-jumper cables (if you have room)
-A small/medium socket wrench with 7mm, 8mm and 10mm sockets and an extension
-A few 5amp,10amp, 15amp fuses
-make sure you have the jack, lug wrench and lug nut lock socket!!
-beef jerky

That should be enough stuff. Make sure all fluids are topped off, brakes are ok, tires have no nails in them, proper air pressure, etc.

Otherwise, there are auto parts stores every where with stuff and that should be no problem.

As far as fuel prices, use google maps to figure out your trip mileage. Figure 25MPG average and multiply by 4.00. The gas prices are going to vary a bit from state to state.

I've made about a dozen road trips x-country(east to west). I made sure I had Synthetic oil in, checked fluids, tires, tool kit(I love having tools available), flashlight, maps, pen & paper. One thing you should consider, is to put on a car bra/mask on the front. No doubt you will pass thru states that have a lot of bugs, and the front of your car will be covered with them and sometimes they are difficult to get off, because they are literally baked onto to the car. The bra/mask saves a lot of trouble. When I got to the other coast, I did a Synthetic oil change at a Jiffy Lube, for my trip back. Happy Motoring :)

Thanks everyone for the tips, I've had my 1984 coupe looked over by a local Corvette only shop near me, they found that it needs a Master cylinder, water pump and AC recharge. Also said the oil pan and transmission pan were damp? It's a twenty some year old car so I'm not too concerned about a damp oil pan and I'm taking everything you've mentioned, I'm taking my 84 and I'm not too worried about chips and bugs as the paint is worn out already. But I woke up last night and thought about all the things that could go wrong, and the one thing that scared me was the heater core, so I'm going to take a gallon of 50/50 anti-freeze and a heater hose by-pass kit in case I'm stuck out on the open highway. And I'm taking a couple of flashlights? Anything else you think of?

Not sure if this even needs to be said, but your cell phone. And most recently I purchased a GPS unit. I really love the way it helps you out particularly when you are in an area where you are unsure of where/when to turn, and the POI (points of interest).

Another thing: take a soft cooler for drinks. You can always get ice at motels and drinks come in handy whether its water or Red Bull.

ok don't laugh ...

take a roll of duck tape or Gorilla tape. It works great as a temporary hose, seal, window :eyerole etc. When that big rock flies up and cracks your floorboard in Wyoming ... you can tape up the hole so your feet don't get wet :thumb

A little " Alabama chrome will get you home" :upthumbs
old saying .. I just had to add that :rotfl

Take a full roll of the good stuff.

Also bring super glue.

One thing, dont take a 50\50 mix of antifreeze. I Take WATER. If you spring a leak you dont want to be smelling and spraying antifreeze everywhere.
It's much better to leave a big nasty puddle of water than antifreeze.

Especially inside the car.

Antifreeze makes a toxic cloud.

your not worried about rust your worried about getting to the next stop.

You can pour in 16.00 dollar a gallon antifreeze after the repair is made.

Hell ,I had a 69 with over 200,000 miles when i'd take off on 2000 mile trips .I'd love to have a little time to do it now :DI drove alone most times and didn't take a lot of precautions .I didn't worry ,I just drove with a smile.

I don't know, I've had my 84 for fifteen years. We kind of grown together. I trust it, it's a feeling you gotta have with a machine. No matter what the age, if you trust yourself, then you trust your machine. I'll take tools, repair stuff and hope for the best. Most likely the last time I'll get to do this.:ohnoes

So you're going to drive some of the old Mother Road... Route 66, right? Can't imagine a crosscountry trip without it! :thumb

:wJane Ann

Yeah Jane Ann, Rt 66 is on the agenda.
