Crossfire: deserving of it's bad rep?

I have had my 84 for about 2 years now. It has 134k and I’ve replace a few parts on it like wheel bearings, U-joints, timing chain, water pump ect. Not because they where broken but I just thought it was time and for my own piece of mind. Although it’s a little bit of a challenge to squeeze serious horsepower out of the crossfire because of the small intake runners its pretty fun trying. I bought another intake and going to try and do a little port work on it. (result of getting wooooped by a WRX :cry lol) It can only help. I love this car and don’t hesitate to drive it anywhere. Gets better gas mileage than my 4 cylinder Toyota 4runner and is arguably one of the best handling Corvettes ever produced. :_rock

I had an '84 and am kicking my a** that I got rid of it. Great car! (actually, I'm trying to find the guy and get it back).

The C5 is also a great car, it's just different. Handles just as well, more power, etc. But it just feels like driving a high preformance Buick vs a sports car. The '84 "feels" like a sports car. Keep it, or you'll probably regret it. YMMV of course.

Again, NOT knocking the C5's.

Do yourself two favors. Keep the C4 and if you have a Crossfire, get to the Crossfire Injection Vault site (http://www.crossfire.webhop.net/cftest) join and participate. GREAT bunch of guys who really know their stuff.
Anyone with a X-fire of any kind that doesn't participate in that site is really missing out. (No, I'm not affiliated in any way, shape or form. I just like them and stay there from my days of owning an X-fire)

I'm on my 3rd 84 this one has 175K miles :) nothing all wrong with them..

Alloydude please keep us posted on your progress with your Cross Fire Mods. I would love to see how it goes.

The guy I purchased the car from told me that his disgruntled ex wife broke the rear window :( so it was replace with a newer type

I actually like it a lot, my car is the exact same color scheme. I always hear people ragging on those third brake lights, but for some reason they look cool to me.

This was said in an earlier post, but bears repeating--those who own (or owned) an '84 are quite happy with them (me included).

It seems each model year C4 has its own unique "personality." Now that would make for an interesting discussion. Hmmmm

look Ive worked on a WHOLE LOT of VETTES over the last 35 plus years and theres nothing wrong with a crossfire tbi engine if your looking for basic transportation, PROVIDED its well maintained, but its severly restricted in AIR FLOW POTENTIAL and AIR FLOW THRU the ENGINE and the RPM LEVELS where the cylinders can fill efficiently DO EFFECT the maximum hp potential.

you can use band-aid approaches like the adaptation of a carb intake with an adapter for the throttle bodies, but the heads, cam and intake are a severe restriction to making power
the heads in stock form flow at about 190cfm
the intake at 190cfm (on the better runners,) and the cams designed for 700rpm-4500rpm
if you retain the STOCK heads, cam and intake your fighting a LOOSING BATTLE compared to guys with the better aftermarket components that are designed to flow mor air at higher rpms and with the drive train mods to match those higher average rpms

Crossfire may be slow but it is the most reliable part of my 35K mile 84 car. It is still a Vette and makes the ladies we..

Another CF owner with no problems

I have replaced the alternator an had the usual dash issues known in the 80's models. CF has given me no problems

Heck, I own (Dont laugh) a 2004 ford freestar and a 97 explorer. Corvette is the best gas milage vehicle in the garage. On a trip it will get 23, explorer 18, minivan 20.

Besides I had to buy the vette to balance out the minivan!

Ive got three vettes but I bought a AVALANCHE 4 door truck as a parts chaser and trip vehical for the family, I can,t see how anyone operates without at least one truck in the family

Interesting how this thread pops up from time to time. An update on my post made almost 2 1/2 years ago: I still have the same 84, with nary a problem. Mileage is still averaging in the high 19's, with highway mileage as good as 25 mpg. Sure, it's probably the slowest of the vettes...but it's still a vette...and it will go into triple digits pretty readily.

OUR 84

Here is a pic of our 84 we purchased from the original owner. We have owned, raced and shown the car for six years now. Shortly after we purchased it we went through the car rebuilding the motor, now 400hp, transmission, new 3:55 rear end and suspension. We have surprised many people with this car. They cannot believe it is the original motor with the Crossfire. We have also been fortunate enough to win several first place show awards. Even one Best in Show and a couple People Choice. WE LOVE OUR 84!

Of course, newer Corvette's should be better than older Corvette's!. That just means the Corvette engineers are doing their jobs right! But you sure can't complain about the "fun factor". My '84 is too much fun! 220,000 and counting . . . just get out there and drive! It's only a machine, but treat them right, and they just keep going!

I was thinking the same thing.. we'll update it again in 2 years time.. Same cars.. :L

My update:
Cant speak for the 84 either, but my 82 CF hasnt given me grief at all. Some routine stuff, but nothing earthshattering. True, it's not a Big Block type of driving, but after 22 years, it's still running well.
:w

Update: 2 years later, still no issues (replaced a possibly in the future leaky water pump and the rad (while we're at it).. oh and, got a code 42, a spark plug cable fell off. :D), now at 105000+ mls, still getting around 20-21 mpg and smiling everytime i get to drive it.

Don't have a '84 but nearly 300,000 miles on my '82 cross fire. (yes the engine had been rebuilt but the cross fire was not touched.) I'm second owner and owned her since '86, not a problem with the cross fire and still get 20 mpg. I bought a spare cross fire manifold/injector setup on ebay 5years ago and it's sitting in the garage covered up "just in case." I've had many mechanics talk smack about it but I tell them the mileage and they all tend to shut up. I just do a lot of oil changes and keep the engine wiped clean.
Thinking about switching to a X-ram someday, any feedback on that would be interesting.
