My wife driving the car and there was a poof of smoke from the steering colum when she adjusted the tilt, and the cruse fuse went. I am assuming that there is an exposed wire in the colum, and it needs to be replaced. My delema, the book makes it sound like a major undertaking to remove the stalk switck. My thought, is to find the wires under the dash, and seperate them from their connector. Attach each one to a seperate fishing line and pull the wires up through the colum from the opening where they enter the cloum. Find the defective wire, replace it and pull the wires back down with the fishing line. My question, has anyone worked on the colum, does this sound reasonable? It is a 1992

Thanks

Bad wire :(

It is not that hard to remove. I have had mine in and out 4 times for various repairs. Some of the bolts are a little hard to reach, but I can be done in one afternoon. I am not sure the wires can be removed while the connectors are still on the ends. Since it happened when the tilt was used, the problem may be up high and reachable with a in-car tear down of the upper half. Find you a shop manual and best of luck!
