It is my understanding that "curb weight" is the weight of a car with no driver or passengers and fuel tank full. Am I correct? My research tells me that my 81 coupe weights 3282. That's lighter than the mid to late 70s going up to 36-3700 lbs. One of the tech people at a very well-known mail-order racing company (I assume that I'm not allowed to say the company name) told me that my cars weighs 3700. I would much rather believe my research and compete with the weight of the C-5 at 3246. Can anybody clear this up and get to the real truth?

The Corvette Black Book show the '81 as 3,307. It also show the 97 C5 as 3,221. The heaviest C3 was the '78 at 3,572. The C3 started out in 68 at 3,210.

Chevy put the 80-82 on a diet with lower density roof panels, thinner hoods and outer doors, and an aluminum differential housing and crossmember.

tom...

don't forget the fiberglass mono spring or the magnesium valve covers.

I thought I'd throw my 'vettes weight in for your info. My '71 LS6 coupe with PS.PB,Tilt-Tele, Rear Defogger, AM-FM Stereo, weighs 3,340 lbs with 1 gal of fuel in it. My '02 LS1 coupe weighs 3,400lbs with every option available EXECEPT side mouldings and front license plate frame and virtually no fuel in car( running practically on vapors!) these are certified weights at scales.

mis-information

on another post, I mentioned that a tech at a well-known mail-order racing company said to me "you've got a heavy car" then he went on to say my car weighs 3700 lbs. My point is there is a lot of mis-information being given out from these so-called knowlable technicians at mail-order catalog companies. in addition to that sales people at these companies can't take an accurate order over the phone. I ordered a flex plate three times in order to get the right one sent. Each time I gave the exact discription given to me by my mechanic. Am I the only one who has experienced this frustration? Sorry, I didn't mean to get up on a soapbox!

I've got my 69 down to 3025 lbs with a full tank of gas.

I found 1 mail order company to have incompetent techs.

69 autoXr: How did you get your '69 down to that weight? That is really light! Since fuel weighs 6.6lbs per gal. 20 gal tank would add 132lbs, so your car would be 2897lbs without fuel. I haven't seen that light of a 'vette since the early solid axles of '57,58 etc.

Hmmm...I could tell you, but there might be some competitors lurking around here that I wouldn't want to find out! Just kidding. Actually, it could be so much lighter...anyway, there's no bumpers, nor any bumper bracketry, light racing seats, limited carpet insulation, FIA headlights that save probably 20 lbs over the stock flip-ups, light weight wheels, and probably some other stuff that I can't remember right now. Let's just say, I've tried to save weight where ever I could.

Oh, that weight includes a 5-point roll bar, probably 65-70 lbs.

69autoXr: You've really modified that car, that makes perfect sense. I participate in the factory and pure stock drags.
