hello all at c.a.c im a new member and hv some questions i need help with ok. my father passed away christmas eve 2013 adand in his passing left me a motor that i was told was a 327,but after further research found out to b a 1960 283 corvette motor numbers matching. im trying to find out what its worth as i am trying to sell to help stepmom to pay funeral exps. even though i would like to keep and use it. so if i could gt any help it would b appricative. i hv been told many prices so am confused. ty all i really like the site and forums.

What numbers are on it that makes you think it came from a Corvette? It can't really be 'numbers matching' unless the car it came from is still around.

i would hv to gt them again but all numbers on block,intake and heads r same thats what i was told to look at. the car was wrecked over 25 yrs ago totally and my father bought it from a buddy that had purchased it after wreck off the guys widow

Welcome the the CAC....we will need to have the casting numbers off the block and the heads and intake along with the code on the front machined area on the left front side by the head as you face the engine. Once we have all that then we can tell you what you are in possesion of. If you can pick up a Corvette Black Book it will have a lot of info on what the numbers mean. I am also sorry to hear of your loss.

I'm not and expert on engines in anyway shape or form so keep this in mind.

If I'm understanding this correctly the 1960 Corvette this engine came out of was a total loss, scraped and never fixed. If that in fact is the case the engine is valuable but the matching numbers that were for this scraped Corvette would make it of course more valuable to the Corvette it came out of, the numbers now would not be that significant to anyone without the car other than proof it was out of a Corvette which may add value to it too some. If the engine has been setting and etc. more than likely would need to be gone through completely costing considerable bucks, therefore not sure the engine would bring big bucks but of course that would depend on how bad someone wanted it, And also how much value coming out of a Corvette would make to someone, just to say it has a Corvette engine in it? Hard to price something like that, I guess if I was looking for a 283 engine and considering all the concerns I would put a value on it at anywhere between and few hundred bucks to maybe $1200.00, again depends on how bad someone was looking for something like this. Run an add in your local paper and remember you can always come down but once you price it never come up anymore from your listed price. Not sure that helps you that much but it really comes down to who is looking for something like this. If the Corvette that it came out of is still around that would make it worth a considerable amount more to the owner, this is when the matching numbers mean something. Again just my view and thought on the matter, may be off base on this but I have bought a few engines and this would be my way of thinking. . . . Again I do not claim to be an expert on this what so ever, so do not send cards and letters or even post to me!

sorry been awhile since been here to cac have gotten a boss # of f0608cf off of 283 engine that my dad left me. still trying to gt motor hauled to my place so i can gt all numbers needed to find out everything i nedd to know but weather is not cooperating ty all

Ok...well the first letter indicates it was built at the Flint plant on June 8th and there is no CF code so is it possible you are seeing a CT code? If it is a CT then what you have is a 283 CI 245 HP engine that was mated with a 4M trans.......or maybe a 3 speed......

They made a 230CQ, 245CT Dual Quads, 275CR Fuelie and 315CS Fuelie, hp engines in 1960 all for manual tranny's.... For Auto's they had a 230DG, 245DJ Dual Quads, and 270CU Dual Quads hp options available.


If it is a CF code I don't know what that would have come out of........I will do some checking. Those numbers and letters are hard to see sometimes after 50 some years.......hope that helps....Does the engine have the 7 fin cast alloy valve covers and the dual 4 barrel carbs?


As to worth, I have no idea but I'm sure its worth something to somebody especially if its all in one piece..........good luck with it.....

A CF code indicates that the engine came from an Impala with a three speed manual.
