corvette specialty out of riverside ca. said they would rebuild my dana 36 with the gears of my choice for 1200 bucks...but the 4 wheel alignment is 129 bucks extra..lol..oh well i need upper a arm bushings anyway...i may as well have it all done

Good price if installed in the car
Guys have been quoting $5- $600 costs for gear only install in diff head (out of car)
Quality D36 gearsets run $400+ (twice the price of D44 ones, go figure))
Bearings/ seals $120+
Clutches $60

thats a total rebuild...new gears, new clutches, new seals and bearings, removed and replaced...:cool

Going buy some of these quotes I would say that is a excellent price to keep you hands clean.
Cost to Change Rear End Ratio?? - Corvette Forum
Make sure you get the speedo gears done while the C beam is out for the diff swap otherwise it has to come out again to swap gears
NB;
depends what drive gear is in your trans and what ratio rear you are going to.In most cases the drive gear has to swapped as well as the driven gear.If only the driven gear needs changing then that can be done by removing the VSS without opening up the trans

How bad is it getting the batwing out? I'm getting ready to pull my Dana 44 in my 90 C4 and move to 4.10 gears. Never pulled a rear axle in a C4. Just wondering what I'm getting myself into.

you must have a 6 speed...
with an auto that might be crazy low..lets see..
final drive 6spd,=i show 35mph @5000rpm in 1st..thats cool enough
and a ridiculus top speed of 190@5ooorpm
but i cant help you with tips on mechenic work..as an apartment dweller in los angeles i am forced to hire this type of stuff done..
1200 bucks is the price i have for a total remove/rebuild/replace...
i had 4:10s in a z28 6 spd..it was perfect..:lou

Easy; remove exhaust/ spare wheel carrier for access
Disconnect halfshafts at inner end, tie rod from batwing , spring from spindles ,support trans.
Disconnect C beam, place jack under diff ,undo the 2 batwing moint mounts and lower down

ok, thats the mechanic's job..
will the 44 fit in the same exact mounting points,as the 36 ?

Batwing is bolt in swap ;only the batwing and head are different D44 v D36. All other suspension parts are the same.
But you must use a D44 C beam or redrill the D36 one because the D44 head is approx 1" longer.

Swap driveshafts too!

so you guys are saying the 44 has a longer snout/or pinion carrier gizmo?
but is the set up larger and or stronger anywhere..???
Its a bigger diff....and when the bat wing is mounted it ends up about 1 inch farther forward hence the need for a shorter driveshaft. Notice the D36 sub axles (pinions) stick out further from the case than the D44. That is due to the D44 being much beefier

Swap driveshafts too!

Because the C4 has a fixed driveline you can use a D36 DS in a D44 swap because it won't bottom out in the trans.
Just sits further into the trans seal.

I've read on the internet that some folks had luck doing that..

During my D44 install I planned on using my D36 driveshaft and C beam in order to save some money. However, it ended up costing me $$$ since I ended up having the D44 Drive shaft overnighted to me when I could not get the D36 shaft to fit

now we are saying, if you are going to make power you Must change to a 44 or expect catastrophic failure at some point..
is that snow in slidel Louisiana,?
where is slidel.?
it seems familiar..
i worked in new iberia for a short while..:beer

Dana 36 and Dana 44 had different size shaft and C beam...

I have re- drill my C beam and shortened/balanced driveshaft on lathe.

Since we have overdrive transmissoin I think the gear ratio is not a big problem in highway use. :beer
