DANA 36 to DANA 44 transplant

Would someone tell me the how to distinguish a DANA 44 from the measly 36? Part nos.? Physical differences, looks? I was told by a salvage yard guy that years '88 through '96 are the same and that a '96 ZR1 unit he has that came w/the 6-speed, would necessitate shortening the drive shaft on my '89 auto. Other than that, like it ain't enough, it is a bolt-in. It seems to me there had to be some automatics built w/the 44, but maybe not w/ higher than 3.45's, which his has. So I would have to a get taller ring & pinion set installed, but no big deal. Also it's only got 7k miles on it, for $675, complete, which is a good price, I'd say. Any help will be appreciated big time. If it's a "go", I don't want to miss it, could get it tomorrow provided anyone is online browsing and can help me decifer this thing.

Well for one thing there was no 96 ZR1, and I am not sure about the LT1 cars, but I know that all manuals from like 86-90 came with the Dana 44. I am not sure about you needing a shorter driveshaft for a six speed car. Are you sure it is a Corvette rear end? Or is that what this guy is telling you?

I'll send a photo of one Dana over another. The 44 is the one on top. Note the center top bolt on the lower, the Dana 36.

You will need the rear cover; the 'bat wing' as some call it, which is rather hard to find. The C-beam and driveshaft are slightly shorter on the 44, as I recall. One CACer worked the holes in it to make his fit, and his driveshaft went on fine, with a little less 'play' or 'allowance'.

Thanks to both of you. So, as long as it is no newer than '96, it will work then. It is supposed to be complete, including the bat wing, so the price doesn't sound too bad. Then again, it will cost a few bucks to change the ring and pinion, any idea how much? To do so would also require an installation kit, I presume, and someone with the tools and know-hoiw to do the job. I had 4:11's put into a '72 nova SS I had a few years ago, bout the same thing changing gears, right? Thanks again.
