hi all, i dont kow much about the dana 36 except that the not the strongest rearend, I was thinking of going to a dana 44, but then I read that the ford 9" rearends are supposed to be some of teh strongest ones out there, Is this true, and if so, is it possible to put one on a 1986 coupe. Thanks for the help.

It's done all the time when the car is use for drag race duty only, but I don't think you'd want it on the street unless Pro Touring is your thing. Which is cool as far as I'm concerned. I love 'em all! :cool

Mike (Whalepirot) started a thread on this subject a few months ago when he broke his 36. Check out Differential tough enuf?, in the Drag Race forum here. :CAC

thanks for the info, maybe i will check out the dana 44 then, they are on ebay all the time. Do I need one that was out of a corvette, or can it be out of any car or truck. thanx for your help again...

The case is specific to the Corvette I believe.

By the way, I'm going to move this to the Mods section, since we're talking modifications. ;)

Ford 9"s are a solid rear axle, so youd have to change the entire rear suspension with it. You shouldnt need one until youre in the 9's in the 1/4. Once you get there, its still hit or miss with the D44.

I saw one for sale, sent you an e-mail :w Welcome :beer These are not always that readily available at a reasonable price.

case specific

A Dana 44 is case specific. I have a Dana 44 front diff on my K5 Blazer and it doesn't have the mounting points for the C-beam in a Vette.

there are some guys running cyroed D44's in the 8 second range. so yes they are strong and will hold up to higher HP usage.
