Dash bit the big one

Well today I got in the car, started it and the instruments were completely dead! I checked all the fuses, found nothing. I pulled apart the dash again for the second time this week. I removed the instrument cluster and checked the pinouts with the factory Helms manual for troubleshooting. I got good power and grounds where needed. I checked again with the dash and got nothing. A very very faint flash/some sort of selftest occurred. On the instrument cluster was a repair sticker from a local shop(my vette has been local for all its life). The tag was dated 6/18/89 or roughly 5,000 miles ago. I called the shop and to my amazement the shop is still in business. I explained my problem and found they could still help. I told them I was going on a trip and if they repaired in house or shipped out. I was told if I could have it there by 4, I could have it back tomorrow. Now I have looked and service like that is hard to find. $60 for a test and inspection, $460 for a complete rebuild with a 1yr complete warranty.

Awesome price. Before I bought my vette the dash had problems and my brother in law (previous owner) paid $600 to have the dash fixed!!!
Where were you back then? No worries My bro in-law paid for it not me! I bought the car with a rebuilt dash.

Cool! Glad to see there are shops out there that still believe in customer service. I have a friend that is an electrical troubleshooter and he did my dash. I bought my 84 the dash worked but didn't light but you could still see what the guages said. He rebuilt it for 200 bucks and it has been almost 3 years and still works great.

Good info, it's nice to find a local craftsman that you are happy with My dash occasionally wakes up completely dead, a light tap on the top of the dashpad wakes it up right now :L I'm sure I'll be looking for service one days

Well I just installed the cluster and the repair did not fix the problem. I double checked all voltage inputs C+D 16, D5, and my ground at D1. All were good, and I am at a loss to figure out the problem. I will have to go back and ensure the gauge cluster works properly. Other than that I have absolutely no gauges and a trip coming up next month.

anyone got any ideas, the shop is closed this weekend so I am left worrying. Everything tells me the cluster is the problem, but I am not sure....I will have to wait for Monday and it is killing me. If the cluster is good then I have no idea. I parked the car in the garage and 2 days later when I go to move her the gauges do not work on startup.....

Just a thought here...did you try the "battery trick"? Unhook the positive cable and shut the entire thing down. Wait a few minutes and re-attach it. Sometimes the system needs to re-boot.....worth a try!

Check your LCD fuse. The cluster should have lasted longer than 5000 miles!

I have disconnected the battery, and all fuses appear good. I will however check them again. When I last parked the car I disconnected the battery. I reconnected and started the car, that is when the gauges did not work?????

If only your gauges are not working, then you probably have a bad DIC controller.

Well the oddest thing happened today. When I got home I backed the car out and checked the fuses once again. All were good, so I left the car running and plugged in the display. And by a miracle of God the thing started working like nothing was wrong. I have tried to get it to fail with no success, I drove 75 mi today over local streets and everything seems fine. Who knows??
