Hey guys, I guess it is my night to ask questions. I hope you won't get tired of me. Tonight I pulled my dash out, what a mess! Why do people do some of the things that they do? After I get the wiring cleaned up and working properly, is there anything you guys recommend doing or checking before I install the new dash? The steel parts that I can see look very solid with just a dusting of rust. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!:cool

My only recomendation would be to remove, clean, and spray any of the rusted pieces that are easily removed. Those little rust dusties can make carpet look like heck if it's light colored and they can fall in your eyes if you ever have to get up under there (from the "been there, done that" files).

Just my $.02.

Did bubba get a hold of your car to?!

I pulled out more than a handful of cut wires from my car. Its to the point that I don't know if I am just going to rewire the car with a generic harness or try buy a COMPLETE replacement harness.

Bubba or Darrel

Hey guys, whoever it was they sure did make a mess. I started this project to find out why the wipers do not work. Well, the wiper switch was unplugged, but after seeing the mess behind the center gauge plate I just had to see what the rest looked like. There are wires (hot) running to------nowhere.:hb Well if it was easy my kid and his friends would be driving sharks instead of those annoying little minnows. I feel better now. Thanks for being here for guys like me.:cool

I like that one, might use it sometime! My wiring was/is a mess too, I thought I had it all taken care of but it seems everytime I try to fix something new I find some new wiring issues.

RECIPE FOR FRUSTRATION-

Take one cherry Vette
- add 1/2 cut harness
- sprinkle liberally with butt connectors
- let fester for 5-7 years

and Voila- INSTAT MESS- just add owner!!

I hate it when people go with sorry repairs. I can't even use the word "ghetto" to describe the cheesy repairs I have seen over the years. Often, its more like "carboard box under a bridge" because the phrase "ghetto" is still too classy!

New discovery

Hey guys, tonight I found something I have never seen. On top of the heater core compartment there is a mini rechargable 12v 1.5 amp battery that has a hot wire running to it. This battery is supplying power to a 8"x 2" silver box with no markings on it. This silver box has a black & red wire and a fabric type wire running to---you guessed it--- NOWHERE!!! Has anybody seen this set up before? Aux. amp? Anti theft device? Just can't wait till tomorrow cause it keeps getting better everyday.:cool

:L :L :L :L I completely know what you are talking about! I started to think (and still do sometimes) that my car was a fire-recovered vehicle. I am the 4th owener afterall. I have wires that simply don't jive with anything else. Colors don't match, hot leads not going anywhere, grounds not grounded. The wiring in my car was a disaster! How about an extra 3-5 feet of antenna wire coiled up under the carpet behind the driver's seat??? As things need to be replaced, the wiring usually goes with it. Fortunately, after 8 years of my car, most stuff is all done and I'm to the point where I can just about enjoy it for an entire summer without something going awry!

I'd place some bets on an alarm system that used to be on the car that was removed before the previous owner sold the car.

Mystery box

Hey guys, it is an early style of alarm system. How it worked who knows. It must of ran off of the ignition switch. I found the siren/horn for it back next to the antenna. There is also a hood switch that I thought activated a light I couldn't find. Next task, new heater/defroster ducts. :cool
