Dashboard Light Question

1985 Corvette Coupe. In have noticed that when I start the engine in the driveway at night, in the dark, with the headlights off, the dashboard lights are brighter than during the day. When I back the car into the lighted garage, the dashboard lights dim, like it's daylight outside. I have four shop lights in my garage, so it's almost like daylight in the garage. When I drive back outside into the dark night the dashboard lights get bright again. Did they have light sensors in 1985? I didn't think that they had such features in 1985, but the dashboard lights seem to respond to outside darkness and brightness. If they did have this feature, where is the sensor located? I showed my wife and she could see the change in the dashboard lights each time I drove in and out of the lighted garage, so I know I'm not hallucinating.

Yes they had sensors in 85. I think the sensor is in the gauge area next to the odometer. It is a little square window the size of a pencil eraser. It has been a while since I sat behind the wheel of my 85, but that should be your answer.

BTW---I started laughing when I pictured your neighbors watching you and your wife driving in the garage...then out....then in....then out.... All the while you are saying.."Look, see, light goes bright.....light goes dim......light goes bright.....light goes dim.......

My neighbors already think I'm nuts. Out in the garage in the middle of the night waxing the Vette, trying to get a better shine out of it, or having band practice by myself, playing the sax while my keyboard is playing by itself, along with a music CD. They're probably saying "There he goes again". I haven't tried playing the sax and waxing the car at the same time though. Would that qualify as "multi-tasking"? We probably looked liked a couple of "bumpkins" out there driving the car in and out of the garage. HAAAAAA ha ha ha ha....now THAT'S funny!

But yes, there is a photocell in the top left corner of the cluster that controls the cluster brightness. The photocell's electrical resistance changes as the ambient light level changes, controlling the illumination intensity of the cluster. Of course when the headlights are on you should be able to control the intensity with the headlight knob.

And yes, that feature started in '84.
