I have a 1965 with powerglide. Can anyone tell me where to look for the ser. number and date code on the tranny. I've looked on both sides and have not been able to locate it yet. Thanks for any help. Roland.

On the transmission oil pan

Look on the right side of the oil pan. And example is T 11 16 N, that would translate to "T", Toledo plant, powerglide, 283, 327, 409, 11 16, Nove 16th, "N" Night shift.

The extension housin is # 3863192. The unit with Corvettes had a first gear range of 1.76 :1 and direct 1: 1 for final drive. Six cylinder and 283 motors had a 1:82 first gear

Thanks for the reply. I'am going to check it out.Roland.

I got the code from my pan, T7T 08N, and according to vettefinderjim this is a july 8 build date from toledo, night shift. This works with my block date of july 8, 1965 and engine pad date of july 12, 1965. Thanks.
Roland.

Thats the part thats been driving me nuts. The vin# is 120992 a june 28 build date. The intake and exaust manafolds are correct and so is the engine 3782870, with a g85 build date (july 8) and the front engine date pad of F0712h(C,O,Q) cant make out the last letter but it makes it a july 12 installaltion. It appears this is not the correct drive train for this car but missing it by two weeks is tough.
Heres the moral of the story. I hired an NCRS judge with a good reputation to go over this car for me. He assured me it was a matching numbers car (original engine with an HQ stamping. Yes there is a 120992 stamp on the pad but no 5 in front of it and with the later date on all the engine components ,well you get what I mean. My advice get the books and check the numbers yourself with the experts to verify. Lucky for me I love this car and would have bought it even with out matching numbers. But you cant take that to the bank.

How about the body date and plant?

Check the trim tag Roland. See if it is an A.O.Smith or St. Louis body. Post all the numbers and letters including the body build date. Just currious.

It is very interesting that the numbers are so close, especially a powerglide car, but later than the vin.

Noland Adams book, "Corvette Restoration Guide-State of the Art, Vol 2" has the following cars close to yours with these dated motors:

vin # 20557 F0614HH
vin # 20658 F0615HQ
vin # 20922 F0602HQ
vin # 20992 your car F0712HQ
vin # 21155 F0625HT
vin # 21435 F0626HT
vin # 21496 F0629HH cast date # F285 (June 28, 65)

Based on the above, I think you have a replacement restamped motor in your car, that is close.......but not correct for NCRS judging purposes.

I would love to have the car in my garage if it bothers you.
Regards,
Jim

Jim, This in no way has anything to do with my car, but in the vin and pad numbers you posted I noticed that the two at the the top of the list with lower vins had a pad stamp after the third one on the list which was on the assembly line after the first two.
was this a normal occurence. Thanks,Roland.

Yes, that's not unusual - the strict inventory control and usage procedures in effect in assembly plants today didn't exist 37 years ago; the engine racks came out of a rail car, were stacked in a storage bay, and the hi-lo driver who stocked the engine dress line picked racks out of the stacks, paying no attention whatever to dates as the line needed them - he just took the easiest one to pick up first, and that rack might have just come in that day - the rack on the bottom of the stack (that came in much sooner) wouldn't get used until the ones on top were pulled and taken to the line. It was pretty random compared to the way it's done today.
