Dead Battery

Went to start the car this morning *******DEAD BATTERY********* It is a 2004 with 2500 miles. Called roadside they came and jumped the car. I checked i did not leave anything on. I took the car for a drive came home shut it off it restarted tryed this about 4 times. Put a battery tender on.if there is a short the battery tender will never fully charge the battery. I feel if the battery is bad that it would not have restarted the car. I checked for codes there were none.I don't know if there is a code when the battery is bad. Is there anything else i should check?.
 
I hope you have solved your problem, and I know some members don't like to repsond to new members. Anyway I would suggest you get your altenator checked also because if you battery is not holding a charge that is usually the culprit especially since it will start of the jump. Just my .o2
 
get a complete electrical check - if it is not the alternator - something is draining the battery and you need to find out what
 
Have you checked your gages for the nominal voltage? Mine varies, but is never less than 13.7vdc, and sometimes is 14.2vdc. Just looking for more data points. I hate electrical issues, they seem to be the worst to isolate & diagnose, and are rarely cheap to fix, at least on cars I've had to deal with. Note, I said cars, my Vette is NOT a car, its my baby!

I did a load test on the battery which came out good. I let it seat for 24hrs and it started right up. I am going to let it seat for 48hrs. It may have been the hatch was open. when it first starts up the amp reading is 14.1 to 14.3 after warming up it reads 13.8 to 13.9. thanks to everybody for there help. I will let you know what the final result is.
 
I wouldn't be too quick to blame the hatch being left open. If the 2004 didn't take a step back from 2001, there is a battery-rundown failsafe that shuts off the interior lights in the event you leave a door or trunk lid open.

Good luck finding the cause.

Splash, is this really your experience here at CAC? Cripes, I hope not! Some questions just take longer to answer if they are of a technical nature that members haven't experienced frequently. I certainly hope no one feels that if they are a relatively new member, they don't get responses to inquiries. These forums are all about sharing information, regardless of whether you've been a member here for years, or just joined yesterday.

I believe Craig-o is correct. If you leave the hood up, doors open, hatch open, etc after 15 minutes s they time out and shut off. That is of course if the timer/relay is working properly.
 
I will know tomorrow because it will be 48hrs since i started it last. I know nothing is on because after locking the car in the garage i shut the door while still in the garage it was pitch dark and nothing was on. I want t thank everybody for all your help. It s just great dealing with other corvette people.
 
Here is my recent battery experience. I have a 03 Z06 I bought it new just about 1 year ago.Have not had the chance to drive it much. 2500 miles. A few months ago the battery was dead..took it out and charged it.. after two days dead again. I just dont have the patience for battery problems and I have heard that the vette batteries are not the best.I bought an Optima yellow top deep battery. I had a red top in my Camaro that never let me down. So far my vette is always ready to go,,even when I am.Hope this helps.

There is a step backward from 2001 to 2004. In 2001 the AGM battery had replaced with a older style wet cell battery (the one used in the earlier C5s). The acid leaks on the older C5s were caused (mostly) by the side terminals being overtightened causing the battery to crack and leak. GM switched to the high performance AGM leak-proof battery (much like an Optima) and it solved the problem. GM later came up with a cheaper solution. They switched to a top terminal wet cell battery.

Being leak proof was not the only benefit of the AGM. It is a better (and more expensive) battery.

I would also consider the battery connections at the terminals being loose. Generally when the weather turns cold if there is a slightly loose terminal connection, it will contract to make it so the battery can't turn over the engine or charge the battery. Just make them snug. Just a thought. - Ron
