Detailing the Altenator & Compressor

I am new to the board and to Corvettes. What do y'all use to remove the oxidation from the altenator, compressor and other grey cast metal housings. Thanks so much, Otto

:pat

Welcome to the CAC ottomatic. Sorry you didn't get a reply to your post. If you're willing to remove the brackets you might try one of the smaller "power ball" drill attachments with your favorite metal polish while sitting at your workbench. Trying an area of the bracket before removal should let you know if it'll work. Just my .02.]

Hopefully someone with a little more detailing savvy will respond with other ideas.

Thanks for your response Dennis.

Well, I tried a small piece of 3M scotch guard-like pad. It did an OK job for a before/after comparison, but it did not look completely clean. I know it was clean, because I tried several mild engine cleaners and such. The rest of the engine compartment looks clean and shiney, except these pot metal (probably cast iron) castings. They look dull.

I can't be the only one with this situation, so more help please.

Thanks, Otto

I used very fine steel wool on all the unplated or unpainted metal parts and a little bit with a dremel tool with a scotch briteish bit for the A/C compressor. I probably wouldn't use the steel wool on the alternator, but it works great on the A/C compressor, lines and fittings, suspension arms, etc.

You guys want to know the best method/product for cleaning the alternator and AC compressor? Want to see a fantastic engine bay?

Let me introduce you to a member called B17Crew. ;)

Here's a thread in which he went into great detail about his methods: B17crew - How I detailed my engine bay

And here's the result:

Here's a statement he made in the thread:

I wanted to mention that you can use Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish on surfaces like your alternator and AC compressor. It also does a nice job on aluminum suspension pieces and any aluminum tubing.

Use a cotton rag and rub into the surface, then, wipe with a clean cotton towel. You will see the shine start to come back! I’ve used a toothbrush before to help scrub in tight spots, you have to watch that the product doesn’t “fling” off the brush though.

Check it out. :cool

I've discovered Adams Products "In & Out Spray" is fantastic for the engine compartment. It makes everything look like you spent hours and hours on it. Spray it on lightly, and you can actually just walk away. Sometimes, you might want to do a little wiping if you spray too much.

Great product!

Thank you for the kind words everybody!

I’ve discovered that detailing the engine bay can be a relaxing experience. Sometimes after a hectic day, it pays to visit the garage and just tidy up the engine bay a little bit more.

Wait, now that I look at that photo, looks like I’ve been having quite a few hectic days. :L

I'm still waiting on you to come give my C5 the B17Crew treatment! ;) The next time you have a hectic and/or stressful day, I'll let you work it out on my Vette. No need to thank me... just trying to help. :D

The way things are going, I could probably work out my days hecticity (I made that word up) out on your magnificent C5 and you would have not only a detailed engine bay, but a detailed undercarriage, suspension and wheels, interior, engine bay, and complete chassis detailing. :L
