Determining Pushrod Length

I'm trying to measure pushrod length for my engine using an adjustable pushrod.

I didn't get any instructions with the adjustable pushrod, but followed what I found here:
http://carcraft.com/techarticles/116_0401_push/index.html

I could see the changes made to the mark on top of the valve when I changed the pushrod length.

I got the mark centered in the middle of the valve as shown below (hard to see in the picture).

My question is about the size of the mark.

The article above seems to say to install the rocker arm (I assume you snug it down), then rotate the rocker arm wheel with your finger making a mark. The mark they show seems thin.

I tightened down the rocker arm, then rotated the crank, causing the rocker arm to make a full pass on the valve stem and it seemed to make a bigger mark, albeit centered.

Does what I did sound correct?

Thanks,
Doug

For those interested, I finally got Trick Flow to fax me a procedure for doing this measurement. It was very easy to follow and the measured length worked out great. I would post the article, but I don't have a scanner handy at the moment.
