I searched around the board but, couldn't find an answer to this question. I have a 1977 Vette that I've owned about a year. It has a small transmission fluid leak. I don't know what kind of fluid is in the car, but it has likely been replaced in the past. I want to add some fluid and the owner's manual calls for Dexron II. Obviously, Dexron II is not available anymore. Called the local dealership and they said I could add Dexron 6 as it is compatable with the old Dexron II. I'm just adding fluid and not replacing all of it. I'm wondering if they are correct and if anyone has opinions on compatability? I'm just adding and not replacing all the fluid. Thanks for your help

From what I am reading on the web (not Covette boards) it appears Dexron 6 is pretty much compatible with all previous formulas of Dexron. Still, I think it is best not to mix different versions, if possible.

I wouldn't have a problem with it,as long it is compatible with the previous formulas.

I'm sure I'm missing something here. You say the dealership told you Dex6 was fine. Why would you not believe them?

Dexron 6 is intended to be backwards compatible with existing Dexron fluids.

On this issue, I doubt there is some kind of conspiracy amongst dealers to sell incompatible transmission fluid to owners of old cars. Nevertheless, those who feel that way can probably find fluid that conforms to Dex2 or 3 from lots of different non-GM-branded sources.

Or...you can just assume that the entire history of Dexron is just a GM conspiracy, then put type FA fluid in your trans and enjoy the more aggressive shifts.:chuckle

It is not exactly that I don't believe them. Dealer service representatives come with varying degrees of experience and knowledge. It's just that I wanted a second opinion. I know there are contributors on this board that know what they are talking about (way beyond my knowledge) and I have confidence in them and value their opinions. Thanks for the replies.

I have been using D-6 in my '82 for almost 2 years, no ill effects, did notice shift improvement and cooler trans temp. The transmission has 60K miles, drained pan, replaced filter and flushed cooler, what was in the convertor was left. I changed my '04 100K mile Blazer 4X4 when D-6 first arrived, same way, did left the old fluid in convertor, flushed cooler and drained pan replaced filter. So it seems to mix well. ;shrug
