You could always do what I did:

- Forget the radio and install a loud exhaust (chambered or otherwise) and enjoy the "real" music.

IPOD with FM Tuner, use your FM Radio and stock speakers, no cutting, no install, just connect, plug into lighter for power, put in glove box and enjoy YOUR TUNES....

I read a bunch if reviews on the itrip unit ...most said it sucked in audio Quality to it was ok but not really impressed....

As far as audio quality goes on the iTrip, you aren't going to hear the difference by going through a stock radio and center dash single speaker anyway. The main problem with it that I have is that the metal of the dash severly blocks the FM signal to the radio. If I hold my iPod in my hand close to the radio it's fine, but just moving it down to sit on the consol or on the seat makes it give a lousy signal to the radio. It's a fairly weak transmitter in the iTrip and I'm sure the designers were figuring that most people are using it in more modern cars where the dash assemblies are plastic not metal. Even setting it in my glove box is really bad because of the metal sidepanels.
using it in my wifes Lexus is no problem no matter where it's sitting, the signal is fine and strong, but in the Vette it's practically useless while driving.
Actually, it's even more useless because I can't hear a da*m thing over the sidepipes anyway! ;LOL

I picked up a Secret Audio set up from a dealer here in Houston that was closing his business. I installed the entire unit in the rear compartment without drilling one hole in the car. First, I cut out a sheet of 5/8" plywood and shaped to fit the rear section all the way against the pilar for the rear deck lid. Mounted the head unit in the center, put two 6 x 9 infinity speakers on each side and the cd changer sits flat on the rear floor area into a cutout on the plywood, and is bolted to the plywood. All the wiring is contained behind the plywood. Put matching carpet on the plywood and set it in place with "j" bolts hooking on to the pillar on each side. It does not produce great sound quality with the top down because the top blocks the speaker somewhat. I later installed a set of the kickpanel Infinity speakers. I've been able to control the unit as far away as 15' with the remote.

The original radio is still in place, and can be played if I ever want to use it, but pretty much have stuck to the CD Changer loaded with Jimmy Buffet :)

Mark - I have two suggestions 1) how about a satelite radio system in the car. I have one in my Honda and really like it. I would suggest you mount two nice speakers in the Jackboard and run the wires under the carpet. 2) mount a small cd player under the jackboard in the compartment on the opposite side of where the jack is and get a remote switch that you can mount under the dash -- again also mount good speakers in the jackboard. Heck, you can make a jackboard with some masonite and carpet.

Cool John...But..

What I'd like to do at this point ..is find out if anyone has mod ed the stock midyear radio with an RCA input to the pre amp section of the unit.

This would enable you to plug in an I Pod or another audio source. I'm not concerened about stereo here..just good play back quality. I thing doing a CD is not the way I want to go. I want to stick with the I pod thing.

Anyone know of where to get wiring diagrams for the mid year radio....Or..Does anyone know if some one has done the above already??

:beer

Mark

i can't find the links right now, but I know that a few of the radio repair places that specialize in the older radio repairs and restorations will do the input conversion for you and I don't think it was too outrageous in cost.

pre-outs are low-level RCA output leads to go from the radio to an amp.

Mark needs to find a unit with an INPUT (usually marked AUX IN or AUDIO IN)

I can't find the links for the one or two radio restoration places I was thinking of. I know I first came across them in various threads on here, looked at them and bookmarked them because at some point I need my radio redone but now I can't find them.
As I was looking I came across this guy. Don't know anything about him but it's was a laugh just reading thru his wedpage! ;LOL It's worth it to look just for entertainment. Who knows, this guy may be kooky enough to be almost as good as he says he is.

I love his reference to Vette people..........
"Now You know along with dealing with so many Vette owners why i have a attitude!" ;LOL ;LOL

Mark

I just remembered this place. http://joesclassiccarradio.com
looks like he can do just about anything you want to your radio. he can restore it or completely modify it and still make it look stock.
I'd like to consider (when the budget allows) sending mine to him, have the inside converted to all digital while keeping the looks completely stock and he should be able to easily add a line input in to add an iPod. The digital insides would also make a huge difference to the sound quality verus the stock analog componets. After doing the radio upgrade, you will definately want to upgrade your speaker though.
Hope this helps a little.
