I recently posted a question on antifreeze leaking out the overflow tube after driving in 85 deg.heat. A response back told me that NO 67 BB had overflow tanks at all.My problem is that I have 4 holes rite above my battery where the tanks ussually live.I tried attatching photos but files were too large, sorry.I'll have tofigure that out later. If that is true than I wonder if i paid BB numbers matching$$$ for a small block car. Can someone else tell me if overflow tanks where used on my car.I even have the tank sticker that reflect 390 to 400 option but sticker doesnt indicate vin #. Did tank stickers ever show vin # information. My car does have a new radiator installed prior to my owning the car. Thanks Jim

As far as I know (I'm no expert), The only BB's with tanks were the 65 396 and the 67 L88 cars. All others used a copper/brass radiator with no tank.

The holes may be production holes that were not used, or someone in the past may have installed a tank.

Thanks Subfixer, The 4 holes for the tank do appear to have had something attatched at some time.

CAn someone else tell me if thier 427 has the holes predrilled for the tank and hoses ..

Jim,

Does this photo help?

My original L-71 in the body shop.

67heaven,Its a pleasure to chat w/you reguarding my car.It appears as though I shouldnt worry about the holes as yours also has them predrilled.I assume your car was origineally a BB also.
One other question I have if I can pick your brain 1 more time,my right front(pass.side) engine mount has a triangular shape wedge shape that has been cut out of it.You can even see the saw marks in them.Any reason that you can think of why a previous owner(ProTeam) may have done that. thanks again, your posts are awsome.. Jim

It's hard to know without seeing it, Jim, but I'm guessing Bubba needed room for that "special" part he had on there some years back. ;)

Jim, I responded to your email, and sent you a couple of pics.

All 67 inner fenders have the holes for the small block fill tank. on big blocks they sloppily filled them with bonding adhesive and it oozes out the holes in a very visible fashion.

Four things come to mind with your original message:
1. You didn't leave expansion room in the top radiator tank and/or you've got a worn out cap.
2.The holes are FILLED or else be worried
3. Tank sticker would have had VIN#.
4. Pro Team = ???????????? re; originality. I hope you got a written guarantee that you bought what you said you bought.

.

Ken,

as for holes being filled, see my above post. And vin was not any any 67 tank sticker. (or 68 or 69) I think 72 was the first year to show vin on the sticker.

Ok..kinda in line with this thread.. I have a question. You BB guys with no fendor exspansion tanks... How far below the Rad cap do you fill your BB Rad's when cold?

In other words.... how mich room should I leave in my Dewitts Rad "TANK" for exspansion to prevent pee-pee out the over flow hose???

:beer

I leave 1.5" in my Dewitts. I don't think there's an engine on the planet that could overtax that Dewitt/dual Spal combo. Just amazing. :eek

For many, many years, one of the greatest fears I had was getting caught in stop-and-go traffic during July or August. I would watch that temp gauge go up like a frightened schoolgirl.

Now? Bring it on muther............ :D

What I did when I had the stock setup (you know that I added an overflow tank for the Harrison-equipped big block) was to fill it within an inch of the bottom of the neck. Why don't you do that and just let it finds it's own level by placing some cardboard on the garage floor? Better that advice.

I have cardboard in OC if you need it.

How about I just fill it ...put the cap on ..heat her up ...and stick a drain pan under the pee-pee tube...

cardboard......................;LOL

that Dewitt/dual Spal combo. Just amazing. :eek

When John Lolli and the Kid were over and we fired the 502 ....the fans cam on at temp...and stayed on and the temp never went above 190*. This is with the motor running at around 2000 to 2500 RPM's... outside temp arond 85*-90* and no fan on the ground in front of the rad.....

Yes Dorthy.......The Dewitts................Just amazing. :eek

I was recently checking out the pics from Northwest Auto Sales of Chip Miller's 67 Lynndale blue 427/435 w/alum heads. Is this a real L-89 car? It shows an expansion tank on the right inner fender. What gives? What can anyone say about this car or this dealer? Inquiring minds want to know. I'm considering a trade because I like that color combo so much, if they will consider it.

Well, now you know why my garage floor is so stained. :eyerole

Hmmm...a pan. What a wonderful country.

BTW, how's your ionic strength these days? Just kidding.:D

I don't know about the L-89 -- even rarer than the rare L-88. If they did have an expansion tank, perhaps the common factor of the "new for 1967" aluminum heads was why. :confused I'm guessing that there was concern about in-service usage of the new heads and Zora wanted to be sure to keep them within the recommended operating tempterature range if at all possible. Other than the heads, it was a plain ol' L-71 (if you can call a L-71 plain ;) ).
