Well I just got Flowmasters because I have heard nothing but good things about them. The thing is I did not know which ones to get so I was just asked the guy to put some nice ones on it that would suit a vette. They look nice and everything but they seem a bit loud for my taste. Also even tho I picked out the tips now that they on there they seem a bit big, its really hard to tell how big they are because the way they are cut. But they look really nice but I am afaird I made my car less like a vette with them. I think the model of the muffler is "Street Muffler" but I am not sure. Something really good about them tho is they increased my performce alot..

anything that looks good and increases performance can't be bad :cool :w

I have Flowmasters and love them...not sure of the style, but they sound throaty and are very heavy duty...cant imagin blowing the side of one of these baby's out....i used the factory tips from corvette central and they look just sweet as can be.
Chas:w

I can almost fit my whole hand in my tips, but like I said you cant tell how big they are because of the way they are cut.

I don't know what your Vette 'sounds' or 'looks' like with the FLOWMASTERS...
but it IS a Corvette, for crips-sake; it SHOULD sound & look like a bad-azz.
Later C3s, like your '81, and my '82, especially need all the 'help' they can get!!!

I'm still trying to figger-out just 'which' mufflers I'll put behind the M-A Designs 2.5"/true-dual kit;
I guess I'm lucky; my neighbors don't 'mind' how loud the Vette is, they think it is " cool "...
but I don't want it sounding like just another 5.0 Rustang, either.
:confused :( :eyerole

Its loud alright.. I dont know I just want to make sure it sounds like a vette and not a ricer. So people dont think it has like no engine and its all muffler.

Really, our stock L-81's & L-83's weren't much of a motor by early C3-standards;
I'm considering running the true-duals to the rear, then bending a 'zig-zag' for each side, and putting on a chrome 'tip', running NO muffler at all!!!
:_rock
With a stock Cross-Fire, I still won't be able to out-run anybody...
but maybe I can scare-'em off!!!
;shrug

that sounds great!!!!!!
make me want to put a set on my 80, to bad I bought the 2.5 stainless from M.A.

I dont even have a corvette engine ;) And my are true dual..
My vette sounds about like that, but when I rev it to high it makes crackle sound I think its because its got air in the gas.

Hey bossvette ,those hooker sidepipes sounds too good :_rock ...

I have the next best thing, Regular headers with 2 1/2" chambered exhaust out the back.....Its a "little" loud for most people, But I luv it....

Bender, I can't believe any corvette V-8 would ever sound like a ricer !!!
But the bottom line is , Do you like it ???? Its your opinion that really matters....
If it makes you grin when you start it or laugh when you mash it down then its perfect....Thats the whole point....
Enjoy it......

I like it, I just was going for a more low sound muffler..

I always wanted a Vette with sidepipes, my first was a 60 back in 1967. A buddys dad had a 65 BB with sidepipes that planted the seed. My second choice would be the full legnth headers with chambered pipes they sound great also.

What's the rest of your exaust system look like? Still stock (cat, exaust manifolds, single pipe in middle, etc.)? I didn't know that mufflers can make noise that much louder/better. I might have to invest. ;)

Walker Dynomax

Flowmasters come in several series styles. It is suppost to be a performance muffler however it does have an annoying tinny sound. The exhaust blasts against the baffels which is a construction method. With a performance engine I prefer the Walker Dynomax mufflers which are a direct fit and nearly straight through emitting a quieter sound while being near the top of the available horsepower range. In otherwords, the horsepower comes through but without the Flowmaster sound. We sell them both and I do instruct a customer that as popular as the Flowmasters are, they are not for everybody. Very popular application on Mustangs however. :upthumbs

I have 2 seprate pipes, not one that splits in to 2.

I have the Dynomax's on my 80. They are more quiet than flowmaster 50's. I'd like a little more sound and was wondering if I would get that by replacing the original Catalytic Convetor with a free flow. Any thoughts?

Flowmaster Response

Hey guys, I have Flowmaster series 30's, connected to 2.5" true duals, coming out of Dynomax ceramic coated 1 5/8" headers. This combination along with a 383 cu. in. engine makes a sound that is just awsome. I love to drive into the parking lot at my golf club and set off the car alarms of the so called elite. Anyway remember this, "If it's too loud, You're too old". peace. Bud :cool

I have hooker headers with straight back exhaust ("true duals" for those that like the lingo). They each are topped off by a Cherry Bomb glass pack.

Flowmasters are predominatly on all mustangs, so expect a little bit of that sound. Dynomax are typically preferred for vettes. But either one is good. The part about "putting your hand in the exhaust tip" has me wondering about the diameter of the tip put on there. What diameter is the opening of the exhaust tips? The length and diameter will affect your final sound.

You can check sounds/vids of my car by going here:
