Differences in a 1997 to 04 consoles ?

I'm trying to swap out the console in my 2003 with one I had customized by a small company and it came back looking stuning. BUT, none of the gas door switch or the power outlets now will fit it. I never thought of wither there was any difference in the consoles from 1997 to 2004, they look identicle with the side lock and a place for the gas door opering switch, but none of the switches or power outlets are different on it as opposed to the 2003 that my car has. They bolt down the same, but that's the end of what fits and what doesn't. I can't believe I didn't check them before I sent it off back in April. I just assumed they were the same ? Thank you !

I've never closely compared the interiors of my '98 and '04 to one another, but like you, on the surface they seemed identical to me... ;shrug

I'm really flustered with this change in the rear consoles. One of my Friends suggested splicing a 1997 gas door switch and the same year extra power outlet, but with my luck they'll be different too. And I don't want to cut up the wiring for this kind a "Fix". :ugh

What did you have done to your console surround, and who did it?

What exactly doesn't fit? Is it only the power outlet and gas door switches do not physically fit into their openings, or is there more? I am pretty sure that the radio surround consoles are all the same.

The consoles are all the same. You may just be having a issue getting your switch back in. It is tricky and if you had one painted, the excess paint mat be in the way. One way to check is to call the dealer and ask for the price of an 97' and a 04'. If they are the same price, ask them if the part numbers are the same. If they are, bingo.

According to my Mitchell Crash Manuel,97-2004 Black are the same part #!!~~!:thumb
In 2003 and 2004 there was also a Neutral Color offered and it's a different part #,But I'd guess it's the same except for the color!:thumb:thumb

I have a 2003 gas door switch and power outlet for a 2003 and there's no way the gas door switch will fit. It's part Number #10402194

it has a calender molded into the underside which dates it's date of manufacture as June 1997. It was done by Craft Customes in Rockwall, TX and it's done in medium Burl-wood finish. I wanted to add a little calmer colors inside the car so I had the same company do the inside door handle surrounds done last spring. They looked so good I decided to add just a tiny bit more, so the rear console would do that perfectly. But the gas door switch won't fit in the console due to a plastic fitting that takes a much smaller switch and once I remove the adapter, then the 2003 gas door switch it is just flopping around in the hole that is way too big for the switch ? I don't see any all turnatives other than getting a 2003 rear console and having the finish done to it ? I'd post pictures but I can't find my recharge cable for the camera. :eyerole

Thats not a good GM Part #,according to my Database Never has been!

10276017 is the correct and only GM# 97-2004 Corvette Fuel Door Switch

There are 2 designs of power outlets though!

I have always followed your advice and I consider you the expert next to Junkman2008. But gentlemen, there is no way to install the gas door switch into the 1997 console. I bought another 2003 shale colored rear console from Vettenuts Inc. and when you place the 1997 next to the 2003, you can see their the same exterior size, but the extra power outlet WILL NOT go in the hole as well as the gas door release WILL NOT FIT. There's no adapter or any kind of plastic do dad the will allow a switch to fit in the 2003 console. Like wise the 2003 gas door switch WILL NOT fit into the 1997 console. I know you guys are thinking this idiot just doesn't know what he's got, but I clearly understand that a official parts manual says there is no difference, but there is. As soon as the 2003 comes back from Texas I'll put them down on the carpet and take photographs so you can see for yourself. But the 1997 console does have a plastic adapter for it's switch, but the 2003 has no adapter at all, the switch snaps into place on it's own as does the extra power outlet, you simple push the power outlet into the hole and twist it a half a turn for it to lock into place. There's no adapters or anything that makes the switches adaptable to the 2003 console, they go into each respected holes/slots and they work right just as they come out of the GM parts boxes.

I believe you man, just post those pics as soon as you can. You can teach us all something!

The difference in years,

I believe you man, just post those pics as soon as you can. You can teach us all something!

You can bet on it. But you'll see the 97 console has a switch that snaps into an adapter, and it snaps into the console. On the 2003 the gas door switch snaps into the console alone. It can only go in one way. I'll post pic's. :w

I've had the console on my living room floor all morning, and I think I have the answer, The consoles are all the same, with two exceptions, One, the gas door switch is totally different in a 1997 from 2003, and the switch itself fits into an adapter and the adapter fits into the console, Now two, the Power outlet is a tad smaller or, the later models took a slightly smaller switch/outlet. So I correct myself, I was wrong and you were quite right ! :w
I'll just keep the extra console along with all the other "spears" I've amassed over the years.

Man, thanks for updating us! I see we have the same taste in consoles. I went a little darker with mine but hey, great minds think alike! :D

Hey Junkman,

Where did you get your burlwood console from? Same vender as the OP? I have some that I am trying to match to the correct burlwood colors, I didn't realize that there were so many choices in colors and patterns.

I sent both pieces to Pat Scorzetti of American Hydrocarbon. That's the best way to do it if you want YOUR pieces back. That way, they will match exactly. He has a fast turn around too.

Thanks for the info, I'll contact them. :)

OH boy, you went with the dark burl-wood, I picked the medium burl-wood and I did my rear console, the front trim switch panel and the door handle surrounds. Lots of people say "Why didn't you go for Carbon fiber?" First off Carbon fiber looks sort of out of place in an automobile, and a "touch" of the burl wood give the interior a nice soft feel. I changed the shift boot and the emergency handle boot as well and the company I use even re-wraped my A4 shifter knob. Anyway that just me, but yours is just short of beautiful !
