Was working under my 81 last night... found a minor leak of gearoil from the drivers side shaft of the diff.
Question 1 what is involved in changing the seal?
Question 2 where is the plug located to check the oil level .

Thank you.... Barry

The fill plug is located on the back side of the pumpkin on the passenger side.Removal of the spare tire carrier is the easiest way to access this plug.Fill with GM# 1052271 oil until it is at top of hole. According to my GM shop manual, you will have to remove the rear from the vehicle to service that seal.May be someone else knows a short cut,but it says here that the seal must be knocked out from the inside.Hope this helps you.

Don't forget to add the Limited Slip Additive when you refill.

Seal does not have to be knocked out from the inside. A good seal puller does the trick. (Or an old screwdriver in a pinch). However, it's tough to do on the car. The rear cover must be removed and the side axle stubs removed to get to the seal.

Thank you for the replies gentlemen!
Think I'll just top it up and keep an eye on it.
The thought of dropping the diff just for a minor seal leak makes my blood pressure rise!!!!
