Recently I noticed my left side seal was leaking a bit. I am going to remove the diff. and replace with a new one. Has anyone done the removal themselves and how difficult was it? I have a feeling this may be some work. Thanks.

Removing the diff is not that difficult. I think the easiest way to do it, first disconnect the spring from the trailingarms and from the diff. Then disconnect the strutrodbracket on the diff and leave it under the diff, or if it's easy to disconnect them at the trailingarms do that. Last one is to disconnect the halfshafts at the diff, make sure you have the right little socket to get them loose. Then it's 2 bolts in the rear and one bolt in de front and your free to go

If you're under the vette the diff is to heavy to keep it up by hand so put something under the diff so you can drag it from under the vette. This would be easier if the strutrods wouldn't be under the diff of course

I have ben told by a few different people that a leaking seal in the 81's is a sign of deeper trouble, I can't remember the exact reason but something is wearing in the diff. and the metal filings are wearing out the seal and by just replacing the seal the problem will return.
