Hi,I'm a New member and lifetime GM fan,I wanted to voice my opinion on the new Z06.In my opinion the one standout feature of the c5 Z06 was the fact that the average working person could actually own one. After reading all the published information on the new Z06 it is clearly evident that GM built an all out "super car" from the frame up and with the all too common dealership "limited availability" charges I forsee an actual sale price of over 100k which would make this car just another of the many that most can only read about.I believe this move is in responce to the Ford GT and a departure from GM's policy of a hotrod for the masses.I know this may sound like sour grapes but their are already hundreds of "super cars" out there that no one can own.Thank you for your time.

Welcome 3968

Welcome to Corvette Action Center.
I have no opinion about the new Z06 and its cost. Enjoy the site.

3968, Welcome to the CAC! This is a great place to voice such opinions.

In general, I'm in agreement with you that the pricing on the new ZO6 is even farther out of reach than the previous model. I would also expect to see dealer markup for it's first season. After that, I think the hype will die down, and we will be able to purchase at or below sticker (not that I can afford that right now either; nor could I afford a C5 Zo6!).

On GM's side, I think they did the right thing. Look at it this way.... the pricing on the new C6 was not significantly increased; however, the car now is almost equal to that in performance to the C5 Z06. This means you are getting much more bang for your buck with the purchase of a base C6. In regards to the C6 Z06, WOW!!! you can have a true "super car" as you called it. It's less expensive than the Viper, and will out perform it hands down.

Hope this helps shed some light on the shiny side!

I'm with Dave on this one. The base C6 is 90%+ C5 Z06 and with a few well placed options you can build one that is as good or better than the C5 Z06 for about the same price.

GM did a good thing to put a real banner car into production. This will be what everyone craves when they go to the showroom, even if they end up driving off in a Cobalt. ;)

$75K may be a bit expensive and you can bet that your typical Chevy dealer will gouge as usual, but some of them will be available for sticker and in a couple of years they'll be easy-to-buy "pre-loved" cars.

That and they'll keep the diaper drivers pooping their pants (no pun intended) while they rattle around in their bucket-o-bolts.

Kudos to GM on finally getting a little wild with their lineup!

Thanks for the reply Dave.I have always been an F-body man,3 68 camaros-2 long term restorations and 1 super pro bracket car-all hi-po big blocks. My last GM was a 99 WS-6 T/A.I am in the process of buying a C6 Z-51,6 spd(had to be ordered and took a lot of talking to get for close to sticker price) but after reading about the Z06 it kinda seems like buying "diet ice cream".I only became interested in Corvettes when the C5 came out.In the late 80's I worked as a tech at a Corvette specialty shop and really had no interest in the product except for a customers 67 427 m-22 Stingray convertible with side pipes that he felt needed constant carburator adjustment and I drove the hell out of (talk about a toy).I'm an automotive extended warranty claim inspector, spend most of the day going from dealer to dealer and am subject to a certain amount of inside info.I don't ever see the Zo6 selling for sticker(large dealers will be lucky to get 5 a year) and certainly no GM programs on any C6's.Best of luck to you...Jeff

Jeff,

I started out as an F-Body man myself! What company do you inspect for if I may ask? My good friend is a claims adjuster for Protective.

Good luck with the C6 Z51. Think about it this way... a supercharger would do wonders for the LS2! :)

-Dave

Thanks for your reply Eric,I don't want to seem like a spoiled brat-yes the base c6 is am incredible car and the fact that GM can offer it for the price is wonderful. In reply I think the z06 will be offered in such limited numbers that it will become a collectors car and even pre-owned will only appreciate in value.

Dave,I'm self employed and contract to 4 administrative companies who contract to various warranty companies both aftermarket and factory including GMPP.I'm sure all the centrifical supercharger companies will offer an LS2 application very shortly but I wouldn't even think about it until after my 3-36 was up!!!!

I perfectly understand your thinking. It does get away from the idea that Corvette's are supposed to be the world class sports car that a blue collar worker can afford. If I was wealthy, I would get a C6 Z06. But I'm not wealthy!:L

On the flip side, one of the greatest things about SBC's is that they sell so many aftermarket go faster goodies for it. That's a good alternative, you get to totally customize your car and it could cost you less.:D

It's possible... but don't forget that's what everyone said about the ZR1. You can now pick one of those up for 18-25K in A+ condition; moderate milage.

Time will tell!

Thanks for the reply Edmond,For me It's not all about actual horsepower It's about the total package. After all who among us is prepared to do 190mph on the turnpike.Myself I would be prepared to give up the aluminum-magnesium-carbon fiber and only do 185mph on the turnpike(lol) for an msrp in the High 50's.As far as aftermarket bolt on's the most valuable single option you purchase with any vehicle is the factory warranty...Have a great day...Jeff

Welcome to the :CAC

The new ZO6 in my opinion is for the true Corvette lovers that are tired of the Vipers and what not and always coming in second. This new ZO6 is the answer, what other 500 HP car can you get for around 75k which will probably be the price from what I have heard. And even if dealers mark them up, so what just wait a year, and get one used with some miles on it. If you don't have all that money which most don't get the base C6 which is nothing to be embarassed about, it is essentially a C5 ZO6. I think GM covered the average buyer, plus the ones with a few dollars in there pocket.

Hey Jeff, welcome to the CAC.

I would be really surprised if the price was 100k, only because I've heard (from purely unofficial, speculative sources) that GM is looking NOT to price the Z06 out of the market. I would be really disappointed, too, if it was that high.

I bought a C5 Z06 because it had the best horsepower and handling for the buck.

The C6 Z06 at +/-500 hp boggles the mind. It would be a good deal for anything low 70's or less. So it seems to me anyway :)

In 2002, 50k seemed an astronomical amount to pay for a car, but when you looked at the prices and features of other 400 hp cars, the z06 was a great deal. Of course, it would have been an even better deal to wait a year and buy a really low mileage one for at least 10k less ;)

My advice, cool your jets if you can, sit back and wait and let the market settle down. There might be one in your future.

Tammy

Hi Tammy,I already have a Z-51 6 speed on order(3 loooong months)...My jets were unable to be cooled...Most of the Chevy dealers in the Ft lauderdale area wanted an additional 10k for the base model,I was able to get mine for close to sticker price...I have no doubt their going to put at least 25k onto the Z06...Local Ford dealer has 1 GT,sticker is 135k-limited availibility charge of 160k believe it or not!!!!

Welcome to the Corvette Action Center. :CAC

I moved this to the Off Road Lounge where the discussion about the new Z06 will be more at home, as I hope you feel at home by now. :w

I personally don't think the MSRP for the car would be much more than $64 or $65 large. However, I think it's the "dealer adjustments" that will push the car well beyond the $75 large range.

Welcome aboard!!!!!!

Welcome to CAC, I know you will enjoy the great people here. The new C-6 Z06 I have heard in the $75K range, but if they are not going to offer too many to each dealer I look for this price to be all over the place due to these dealer allotments, the small dealers will get very few if any! But as the market eases up a little and they are easier to get they should settle down some! Does anyone know the production numbers for it yet? At anyrate it will be more than I can afford for setting in the garage other than the week-ends and scheduled trips in the summer. I am still happy just having a C-5 for now, besides the new C-6 is still growing on me and not very fast!!!

Bill :w

Didn't they want so shoot for 15-20% of total Corvette production?
