I posted about a noise coming from what I thouht was a waterpump a few days ago. A friend and were changing it today and noticed that the harmonic balancer looked weird. Upon examination we realized that the center part was coming out and rubbing on the timing chain cover. Almost rubbed a hole in it. My friend cleaned up around the rubbed spot and put some epoxy over it for safe keeping. Many thanks to the folks that replied to my earlier posting about water pump noise. It was a great help to get some advice from folks that know their sh*t. I look forward reading postings and having you guys and gals to help steer me in the right direction. By the way I saw a notice a posting about the Effingham fun fest in September. Any of you folks going?

Thanks again... Dave

Hi Dave,

Acually, the center part is attached to the crankshaft and can't 'come out'.

The harmonic balancer has 2 parts: inner hub and outer ring.

What has happened is the outer ring has gotten loose and has moved.

The outer ring is pressed onto the hub and has rubber between these 2 parts. With age the rubber dries and shrinks allowing the outer ring to dislocate. You need a new harmonic balancer.

It's best if you go ahead and replace the timing chain cover while you have the balancer and water pump off too.
