distribuitor and tach help

The picture is definitely of a distributor with an electrical tachometer.
Since your car has a mechanical tach I see two options:
1) buy a new distributor that can be used with the stock mechanical gauge
2) buy a new gauge

Personally, I would go with (1).
It keeps the car closer to original, and it is probably a lot easier to swap distributors and reconnect the tach cable than to tear out the dash to do a gauge swap.

get one of thee HEI with tach drive distributers from ebay from the Allignition company. I think they are called dragonfire or something.

i had one and it ran great (but it didnt fit the ignition shielding so i sold it)

Post a better pic of what you have. It sounds like a previous owner has swapped the original point type mechanical drive tach for an HEI unit. Both were made by Delco.

Unless the previous owner swapped out the tach, then you're beating your head againt the wall. Mechanical drive tach won't work with the HEI. You will need to swap to a 75 and up electric tach, go back to the original tach drive distributor, or spring for a mechanical drive HEI.

:)

Ok I'll post a better picture with my digital camera. My I -phone does not focus well close up. You guys are really helping me now!! Keep it coming.
